RLJ cyclist

I think it would be more unusual to film a cyclist stopping at a red light on my commute! sad times

It's so common around London, I got sarcasm from a pedestrian. I stopped at a red light that's effectively a pedestrian light: there was a green man. A couple crossed the road and the man did a huge "thank you for giving way to me" wave, like I done him a huge favour.

But he's right, most London cyclists don't stop at red.

edit: I've noticed since the 7dayshop cameras have appeared, lots of incidents happen on 1 Jan 2008

A study by tfl said that 16% of cyclists rlj in London
In the majority of cases it's done safely, you get the odd one that makes it dangerous.

I shall add that just because it's done safely does not make it right. It can damage the image of cycling.

The ever present danger with RLJ for a right turn at that sort of junction is

RLJ = RIP

Generally I disapprove, it's bad for the image of cyclists, it's usually dangerous to either the cyclist or pedestrians, and is part of a culture of impatience and haste which disadvantages everyone.

Its because the person who purchased the camera didn't put the right date on, so it will be 1Jan 2008 as a Default

Have read the instructions that came with the camera. I did manage to set the time and date bit forgot to switch off in the correct way and it was reset :wacko:

16% admit to RLJing perhaps? On my usual commute from north(ish) London I'd say 50% of people RLJ, but yesterday I cycled to Camden from south west London and I swear the only cyclists that waited for green on A40 (from shepherds bush to lancaster gate) were the ones that were stuck behind me! I even got a mouthful from one chap for stopping at a red and holding him up! Is saw 4 near misses in 11 miles.

but anyway . . . .

Not true. TfL set up a study to look into this specifically and found an average RLJ rate in cyclists in rush hour of 18%. That compares with RAC Foundation figures for motor vehicles in London RLJing more than 3 seconds after the lights turned red of about 10% for cars and 20% for buses. So if you took a guess at how many motor vehicles RLJ it must be at least as many as cyclists.

There is a difference though. Motor vehicles mainly try and get across a junction on red before traffic moves from the other direction while cyclists tend to behave more like pedestrians and wait until traffic has stopped crossing the junction and then go if its clear. I know which is more dangerous and I know which is more pilloried.

Incidentally 50% more cyclists are killed in London by RLJing cars than by being an RLJing cyclist.

As red light said above. It was a study set up at separate junctions and they counted them.

only 5 junctions? Do you know how they selected them by any chance? I think the rates would be highly variable depending on which junctions they selected. Maybe I'm just bitter because I nearly got taken out by an RLJing cyclist last week!
