RLJ nearly taken out by a cyclist colleague...

Colleague and I cycling home this evening, approaching junction onto a dual carriageway and the lights turned green.
We picked up to about 20 and out to the right, I looked to my left to check where my colleague was before taking my line and a cyclist RLJ was shooting up toward his inside without slowing.
He didn't have enough room to pass and my colleague who hadn't seen him as he had shot up inside the staionary traffic to RLJ.

Luckily, as I veered right, my colleague glimpsed the rider and veered sharply away.
The RLJ just continued on his line, oblivious or just arrogant of the accident that so nearly was.

Surprisingly he wasn't your usual ninja, but some mid-forties guy with middle aged spread on an old steel roadie in a cotton top and shorts/trainers.

You just never know!

I don't think it is surprising. A material proportion of the RLJ I see are middle aged blokes.

It's arrogance, not ignorance. I wonder how they behave in a car too?

Funny that this thread should come up today as I witnessed a RLJ this morning that had me tutting furiously! Now, I'm not entirely averse to RLJ'ing myself [\flame proof suit on] but this takes the form of rolling across empty junctions when there is no other traffic about. Today I chased a guy down New Zealand Rd in Stockport (SCR) but only caught him as we reached the lights. I thought I would be on for a good challenge as we climbed back up to Bredbury as to be honest, catching him had taken more effort than expected. Unfortunately, at the lights he crossed to the opposite kerb and circumvented the junction leaving me waiting for what seemed like an age as the lights went through a pedestrian crossing sequence then allowed traffic from a different direction before it was my turn. I climbed the hill to the lights at Bredbury Morrisons and got within 20ft of catching the guy before I turned left to Denton but when I got a look at the cyclist he looked as though he was approaching his 50's!!!

Hopefully when he is flattened by a truck he is less likely to take any one with him. What a complete to$$er.

Sadly there are too many MAMILs like him cycling on the roads.

That junction at the end of New Zealand road is ridiculously slow in relation to the light sequence. I often ride to the kerb nearest the park and cross to avoid the stupid unintelligent sequence of those lights. They used not even alknowledge cyclists and ignored them entirely on that route to the right up to Bredbury if there were no vehicles on that side of the junction. Sometimes there is a justification for kerbing it to achieve forward movement. And New zealand road is a wicked hill and you want to maintain as much of your momentum as possible. Gez

We're all approaching our 50s unless we are 50+. Does that mean you were surprised that he was less than 50?
Yes, but some of us are approaching from a lot further away

I was surprised that someone who looked like a seasoned cyclist (from behind his legs looked like they had lots of miles in them) would pull such a shoddy move at the lights. I was pleased that despite him having maybe a 2 minute head start up the hill I effectively caught him over 0.9 miles and a climb of 125ft but then dissapointed when I saw he was probably about at least 10yrs older than me.
