RLJing "Cyclists": to challenge or not?

RLJing so called 'cyclists'.

I should learn to keep my big mouth shut. Really I should.

Cycling along today I caught and passed a guy on an old MTB. It was daytime, he had a red flashing light on (although obscured until very close by a clip on mudguard) and was wearing a workmen style hi viz tabard. He wasn't very road aware and rode along next to the kerb with not a shoulder glance to be seen.

I passed him but was stopped by red lights at the junction ahead. He came along, slowed and then headed out to cross the junction while the lights were still red. I shouted at him "The lights are red mate." and he came back with "What's it got to do with you?". The lights turned to green and I passed him again and told him "You give all cyclists a bad name that's what it's got to do with me." I carried on about half a mile down the hill and was stopped again by a red light. He came past about 30 seconds later shouting something like "Watch me, I'm going to do it again." After the next lights I passed him and said nothing but was stopped on red at the next junction. A short while later he squeezed past on my inside without slowing and straight across the junction. This is the bit when I should just learn to just keep quiet but i didn't and shouted after him he was a kn*$&*£d. He stopped, circled round and came back to challenge me. He threw his bike on the ground and came at me with fists clenched shouting something nasty. I got off my bike and told him he was making a mistake. He was in his 50's, shorter and much lighter than me. I said "You better make your first one count because it will the only one you get." At this point three drivers in the queue behind, who had obviously seen what was going on, started getting involved. I told them he had gone thru all the red lights along the road and didn't like being challenged about it. He then decided to get on his bike and cycled off - thru the red lights!

I should just learn to shake my head and not get involved but find it difficult. How would you handle the situation?

I don't bother anymore.

Don't bother unless they put pedestrians at risk by riding close to them. I'll make a poitn about how dangerous for the pedestrian it was.

Funny thing is, based on my limited pexerience, it's usally female cyclists.

Much ado about nothing, IMHO. Oh, and they DON'T "give all cyclists a bad name", just themselves.
I drive a car, and see twonks in cars do stupid things but they aren't giving all car drivers a bad name. There are nobbers in all walks of life, and they use all sorts of transport modes.

True to a point but I get sick of hearing from non cyclists about RLJing cyclists and it is used by some to castigate the whole cycling population. Just because this is a stupid argument doesn't mean I like to be tarred with the same brush.

Tbh as much as it annoys me (along with pavement and no lights cyclists) I let them get on with it.... as it nots worth a possible nasty confrontation as you found out......... I do give peds who step who step out in front of me a deliberately sarcastic and loud Whoaaaaaaaa (as I'm on a bike and most people couldn't catch me on foot)

"Used" being the main point in your post. It is a smokescreen tactic used by some drivers, whose real problem with cyclists is that in traffic, we make faster progress, and generally do it at a fraction of the cost, with the added health benefits too. Away from the traffic, we might slow them down as they have to manoeuvre round us.

I get that.
People will limit criticism of motorists to certain subsets, such as cabbies, private hires, WVM etc, tarring them with the same brush of bad driving behaviours but never generalise it to all drivers.

And this is where we do get bad name in general because people who see poorly behaved cyclists can't identify them as a smaller subset, so tar us all with the same brush. I know some people on here will argue that it doesn't but look at any newspaper's cycling story where public comments are allowed and you'll see it at work.

I don't bother either - unless they put me at risk that is.

I very nearly got T boned by a RLJing cyclist at a junction in Cambridge a few years ago and when I told her she was an idiot for RLJing I was met with a tirade of abusive language that would have made Bernard Manning blush! Not worth the bother really - leave them to it.

I don't with peds generally,I've cleaned up my act.Had one step into the CS2 bike lane at Stratford recently but as I have no airzound fitted I just let him get on with it.I did have a slight inkling that he may do that though. He put his hand up in apology and we lived happily ever after.
