Road bike lugage

Hi,

Im looking to be getting a road bike next year, I usually use a backpack now with my MTB but would like to loose the sweaty back if possible.


The bikes Im looking at (Boardman comp or Spash allez) dont have panier lugs, and to be honest paniers would be mor ethan I want.


Are there any light weight lugage options out there? All I need is to be able to fit in a sweatshirt and trackies, or a few odds and sods from sainsburys that fit in quite a small rucksack.

I've gone for this combo on my Secteur.
Topeak seatpost rack and panier,bag is QR and the sides can be folded up when you only need the rack part.
All good so far,even bought a rain cover ready for winter.

That looks like just the thing I want!

One question, does it only clamp to the seatpost as it looks like there are attachments at the side (or are they just to stop the side bags going into the wheel?

Would there be any chance of a photo of it on the bike when you have chance please?

Yes pal the 'sides' are detachable and you need them if you have the paniers unzipped as you say to stop them hitting the wheels.
Will sort a pic tomorrow if I can't find one already done.

Was using one of these, but it's just a bit small for commuting duties.

I know Haloj,Fossyant and norm all use similar systems,there are a few different ones out there.
The one I have is fairly compact but can hold around 7 litres.

I have something similar on my bikes - the rack moves between bikes quickly and easily, the bag slides on and off effortlessly.

The side pieces are optional and, yes, they are to stop pannier / wheel interfacing. It clamps to the seat post and the neck can be bent upwards, downwards or flat to keep the weight low.

I did a trip to the pet store today, 2kg of biscuits in the top and 4 on either side (yes, it was over the limit), together with various chews, tennis balls etc. All swallowed up nicely. The side panniers fold up when not in use, and potsy's photo has the top expanded as well, so it doesn't always have that bulk.

Fantastic kit, IMO.

Another question about the rack, as its fastend to the seat post only, and doesnt get support form the rear stays, do you feel it flexing the seatpost over bumps?

It doesn't flex the seat post. Even fully loaded (if you stick to the limits ) it's about 10kg, which is a lot less than my fat arse weighs. I know my fat arse sits at the top of the tube but the forces with the hands on your bars do not go straight down the pipes.

The other thing, and this is why I wrote that "It clamps to the seat post and the neck can be bent upwards, downwards or flat to keep the weight low" is that mine is mounted touching the seat post clamp, with a hope that it minimises any forces it might otherwise cause on the seat post.

IMO, have the clamp low on the seat post and choose the neck shape to keep the carrier low-ish over the tyre and you won't have problems.

If you have a bag like that Paul I would just buy any seatpost rack and not the Topeak one,as these are designed to match with the bag and have a QR rail system.
You'd just be bungee fixing it or strapping it to the rack so you wouldn't need the QR one.
As for the seat post flex,well I've not noticed any but I only carry 5kg max and mine has a limit of 7kg.I'm also a lot lighter than norm
