Road Bike spine protector

I've just been injured in traffic while road biking (http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/knocked-off-my-bike-in-a-cycle-lane.163576/). Since the primary injury I suffered was to my spine, I'm now searching for spine protectors for road biking. I know these exist for motorcycles and for mountain biking, but I haven't found anything for road biking.

I'm thinking more lightweight and breathable than the mountain biking alternative. I think a spine protector would have saved me a lot of injury.

Hi annirak - I saw your post about the accident, what an awful thing. I hope you recover quickly.

Snowboarders and sometimes skiers also wear spinal protection - might this be any lighter? I don't know but it's just the first thing that came to mind when reading your question.

I'm sure there will be people who will want to impress on you that cycling is not usually dangerous etc - this is true but I am not surprised you feel the need to protect yourself a little more as your injuries were caused solely but a driver's carelessness.

I'm not sure a protector could be made flexible enough and still provide any protection for cycling. I know they work for motorcycles, but you don't have to pedal a motorcycle

Some mountain bikers use similar gear. They do get VERY hot and uncomfortable wearing them though! Usually they are fitted in pockets in a special top. Sadly the real thing that would protect the spine is not for a crash to happen, which doesnt help you, I know, Annirak.

As it turns out, what I have is, apparently, a compression fracture of some variety, so a spine protector wouldn't have helped me anyway.
