At secondary school, we used to play hockey on a so called all-weather pitch which was basically very fine gravel on tarmac. Made a lovely job of your skin in a fall.

Our sadistic PE teacher always took great delight in liberally coating the raw areas in Dettol :cursing::evil:

Has anyone else wondered why roadies can't have some kind of lightweight (not gossamer light) 'protection' for our little 'spillages'.

By that, of course I mean elbow, knee, shin pad type protection as sported by MTBers but more flexy & less bulky.

Just enough to lessen the results of impact & gravel rash.

Are there any such products even ?

i think its down to most roadies are obsessed with speed and keeping the weight down. maybe i should patent road rash as a way of saving weight by removing skin.
personally i enjoy a nice quiet slow ride enjoying the scenery ect if i want to go fast i use a car

They are called clothes ;)

I was very glad my recent accident was in winter, although I still managed to graze my elbow through a l/s wind proof thickish jersey and a base layer, neither of which were damaged! I could have done with shin pads though to protect my lower leg from the frame of the bike . As much as I hate road rash, it would have been preferable! I did end up with oral and IV antibiotics as a result

GWS to the OP, you have my sympathies...I err badly grazed my face in a drunken fall in mid January...my cheek is still numb!

Road rash hurts like hell.

I came off last year on a damp corner. Admitted i went way to fast into it and remember thinking, this is going to hurt. Still have a funny colour patch of skin where the scab was.
