Road Rides Grimsby area,

I will be in the Grimsb y area (Keelby to be precise) for a few days next month.Thinking of taking the bike. Can anyone recommend a ride of about 50 or 60 miles?

Doesnt neccesarilly have to start in Grimsby, I can drive out to the start /finish ,must be all on Tarmac roads .

In fact "jjwhite" may be worth a direct contact. IIRC the Lincolnshire Wolds are rather harder work than the map suggests, especially up long gentle hills into a strong westerly wind.

Here's another thought, Banjo. If you head over to Kimmington, then up the back roads to Barton, you can cycle over the Humber Bridge, head east to Thorngumbald (worth it for the name) and go right down to Spurn Head. That is about 90 miles there and back, but you could drive the first bit if you wanted.

Going through Hull is rather dull, but the A1033 is pretty quiet and both the bridge crossing and Spurn are not something you do every day. BTW, the road down to the point is worn concrete but OK - I did it, slowly, on 23cs with 110psi.

The other novelty ride I did was from Lincoln, north up the Roman Road to the settlement east of Winteringham - the Romans then crossed by boat to Brough. I wanted to see if I could average 20mph. Er, no - what a surprise. I then returned along the B1398, which tracks the bottom of the scarp much more picturesquely.

Funnily enough I am interested in visiting spurn Head so may look at driving part way then maybe leave the car near the Humber Bridge at my brother in laws place.

Normally Im not keen on visiting relatives but Im looking forward to it this time :-)

When I last did it, the road to spurn head was almost unridable, part of the original concorete road had been washed away which had been replaced with a road made from small concorete blocks with gaps of several inches between them which made for a less than enjoyable ride

Ah. I see from my log book that I went to Spurn Head as part of a 130 miler from Goole via Beverley and Hornsea on 11 August 2002. I could have sworn it was only a couple of summers ago.

There is a permanent lifeboat station at the end,with a clutch of cottages, so it will never be completely unrideable. The concrete bit is just under 3 miles and most of it will be ok; you'll just have to treat it as part of the adventure. I assume it is regularly damaged and repaired - when did you do it, Lee?

I went down to Spurn this Summer and after hitting the concrete blocks, there was a lot of sand covering the road making it heavy going, after a short distance we called it a day and carried our bikes back to the start of the tarmac before we got too much sand on our chain, deraileurs and bearings etc.

After these strong winds we've had these past few days things may have cleared or got worse.

I'm from Keelby orginally, although being a relative noob cycling I've not extensive experience exploring the area on bike.

The area between Keelby and Humber bridge has some fairly nice, quiet roads to explore (Thornton Abbey is worth a stop). So any loop heading up to the bridge should be nice, if you carry on further west to Alkborough you end up on a ridge with some decent views of where the Trent and Ouse meet and over into Yorkshire.

If you head to Caistor and down South there's a road over the top of the Wolds to Horncastle and could loop back either Market Raisen or Louth side.

But like I say, I'm no expert and take the chance to do some exploring myself when I go back.
