Hi, I'm switching my cross bike over to road duties and first on the hit list is new tyres.
Can someone recommend some all purpose, hard wearing road tyres?
So far I've heard that the two in contention are Continental Gator Skins and Maxxis Detonators.
I'm looking for an all purpose, all weather durable tyre.

Thank you.

Detonators are poor, I had them on the Whyte (now have M+ but although very puncture resistant they are quite heavy and slow)

Look at the Vittoria Rubinos? Ribble have in 28 for £9.50 - @jefmcg has done many 000s of kms on hers (in 23mm guise)

Hey thanks for the advice folks. I'm actually happy to spend a few quid on the tyres if they'll last.

I've heard mixed reports about the Vittorias.

I was almost dead set on the gator skins until I was told they are awful in damp conditions, and Wales gets rather damp this time of year, now it's all up in the air again.

28mm Conti 4seasons is what's on my CX right now. It's only done 800 miles so far, but the mould line has only just worn off the tyres now, so it looks like they are gonna last a while

No punctures so far either and they've taken light touring duties too.

Continental Four seasons here too. Have been running 25c on commuter for just over 500 miles in mixed weathers & they grip well. Giving me plenty of confidence. Only puncture was a huge thorn from a freshly cut hedge. Doh...!
Just put some 28c 4 seasons on my winter bike.

"Hard wearing" and "all weather" seem to be mutually exclusive terms as far as tyres go. Whatever you go for is going to be a bit of a compromise.

Barnet,
I find Conti. Gatorskins very good tyres, I have run them on several of my bikes for many years without problems. I know that some people have complained about the slippyness of them, but I have not found that. I would say though that you must keep them up to pressure to get the best out of them.

May I tap into the end of this thread: In a moment of poverty versus new tyre urgently needed I have just fitted (but not yet ridden) a new 700 X 28C Vittoria Zaffiro tyre to the rear wheel of my hybrid. Reading this thread I am forced to wonder if I have boobed big time and will I end up spending more time patching the tube than riding the bike?. I will also need a new front tyre very soon so I will get a Rubino which has far better reviews and for only a couple of quid more. I just hope they get me through the winter.

Absolute down pour last night an 1" of rain in 30 mins or so, didn't have a problem on my gatorskins.

I didn't find any problems with my zaffiro tyres. Didn't have them from new, as they came on my second hand bike, but never had a single puncture in 500 miles.
