Rohloff Owners Club

Well, as my last suggestion did not engender a great deal of enthusiasm I have been musing on the cause for this poor response. I now think I know what needs doing to make it more appealing to all you CC Rohloff owners out there. Rather than meet somewhere nice with a bit of cycling, camping and drinking thrown in we could just have an online owners club!

I envisage there are many different areas of specific interest and so several member sections will be required. A few that spring to mind are: a Rohloff with Brooks saddle section, a Rohloff with SON hub section, a Rohloff with Tubus racks section, a Rohloff with butterfly handlebars section, a Rohloff with dynamo lighting section, a Rohloff with disc brakes, a tandem Rohloff section, etc, etc. This will therefore provide a useful club for these particular owners specialists needs and so, I hope, make it more attractive to join. We could even have a section for prospective Rohloff owners. The possibilities are only limited by our imagination people.

Of course, as the founding member I will be President for life but do not despair as I will require a few people to do the secretarial and clerical stuff that is all so important and I will have to have a Vice President and a Treasurer to manage the membership fees and maybe a driver for all the meetings I will no doubt need to attend one the club takes off and a press officer...anyway you get the idea.

So who is interested in joining and who would like first shot at applying to become a club official?...anyone??

Your club probably has rather too niche an appeal...In the main people who own a Rohloff do so for touring. (although I know there are mountain bikers and commuters too...) so for me a forum with a broader outlook (called say "touring and expedition") is more useful and more interesting. The beauty of my Rohloff is that it just does its job perfectly, needs very little maintenance and keeps on going and going. I know how to use it and mantain it. I don't know how its inards work and don't care. What else is there to talk about?

Most of the threads on here about Rohloffs have been "should I or shouldn't I?" questions. Some say yes, some say no. There is no right answer because there are different pros and cons for each individual. Your proposed forum would just take the "yes" crowd by definition thus irradiating the only source of debate.

Dear Hubbike

Thank you for considered and thoughtful reply. I think you will make a good Press Officer.

I agree The Club will only have niche appeal...at the start. What is needed of course is an eventual takeover of CC. All forums should by default be Rohloff + whatever interest with just a secondary category for anyone who has not yet seen the light. Of course we have to start this quest for domination at a realistic level hence the gathering of the believers. I'm sure we will face many hurdles on our journey but will overcome with faith and perseverance.

P.S. please send me your CV for consideration.

Thanks again.

Dear Dubman

A t-shirt is a start at least and so I am happy to give you associate membership which can be upgraded when you get a Rohloff. Oh, please note for future correspondence it is Rohloff with a capital R and never rohloff.

P.S where did you get the t-shirt?

Thanks

not sure if your taking the p..s or not but i reckon your idea is not as crazy as it sounds.

guess every club has to start somewhere ,look at all the car owners clubs well maybe not.
i put a few feelers out on starting a cycle/camping/touring club here in ireland but didn't get all that much of a response i think when you start something you really need to go all out and stick to your guns.

keep it going buddy see what happens

Nah, I think you need to be a bit more niche. Maybe subsections for wearers of different coloured socks and perhaps favourite cheeses?

Might it not be a far more exclusive/endangered with very worthy competition from the Alfine 11?

Dear Jags

Thank you for support. It is nice to be taken seriously.

Do you have a Rohloff or do you want to be an associate member for the moment?

Cheers

Dear Dubman

Both t-shirts look good. I particularly like the first one which is very...Teutonic! I will be placing a personal order shortly. Perhaps you could approach the companies to see if we could arrange a club deal for a bulk purchase? Get back to me on that one.

Your apology re grammar is happily accepted.

Re your link. I take it you are copy and pasting into the link box? If so just make sure you delete the default "http://" which is already there.

Dear Albion

The Alfine 11 will no doubt have it's champions but a Rohloff is peerless. The two cannot be considered on a par. Anyway, what do you do with an Alfine when you get to 11. You can't turn it up to 14!

Thanks but no thanks.

Dear Pottsy

I really do not think we need to bring colour into it. We all know that Rohoff owners will be men wearing black socks with either SPDs or mulit-activity shoes. Failing that they will have sandals (with no socks). Whatever next? categories for men and women? Female stokers on Rohloff equipped tandems can join as associate members if they wish. Let's have no more suggestion of colour or gender discrimination please people.

Now your cheese idea has merit. Could you make a list of different cheese types, textures and flavours, break it down by region and country and then get it back to me for consideration ASAP.

Many thanks

I reckon this is the kind of thing I would join...

Perhaps you should try building a relationship with Rohloff, so they're all packaged with an invite to the club .

All the can owner clubs were started because people wanted to make some sort of recognised appreciation at the quality of the craftsmanship of the car in question (for example, an Aston Martin).

I see no harm in doing something similar for my Rohloff - it is simply an amazing piece of engineering and craftsmanship.

Dear Pkeenan

I like you. A Rohloff, butterfly bars and a SON. Nice touring bike in the Thorn Raven Nomad as well. You can be VP. First job - get on to Rohloff about packaging a club invite with all their products please.
