The summer has been long and sunny, and all the riding outside. This evening though, as the night was darker sooner and I was running late, I thought I would dust off the rollers for the winter ahead.

Well, all went well for a while, then quick as you like.......woomph! I was laid on the garage floor and more than a bit messed up. Luckily I missed the motorbike and only hit the floor. I am now laid on the sofa with a bag of peas on my knee and a sore elbow! Bloody hell
When i first read the title i thought you meant the ones you put in your hair.....

My youngest skipped training this weekend so both of us were on the rollers for the first time in months.

Now he's had 2 years' practice. Me? A couple of goes on a set of borrowed rollers from long absent CC member @Mr Haematocrit 18 months ago.

I came off only once - but a strategically positioned sofa cushioned the fall: https://www.strava.com/activities/392254726

Do rollers give you a resistance? How does that work? A fan or a brake?
Not much compared to a turbo, although you can buy rollers with resistance units. In general the resistance curve is more linear. Rollers are more about high cadence and technique. Some people would also say they help with 'core strength', although I'm not quite sure I believe that.

My only recent crash was from rollers. It just felt so weird pedalling along and not going anywhere. The big difference is having the front wheel on. Half the workout is using muscles found elsewhere than in the legs balancing and staying upright (usually).

I crashed and burned despite locating the thing in a doorway. I banged my head for the first time cycling (oh the irony) and experienced a sharp pain in the posterior area.

Upon closer inspection I had landed on some knitting and bent one needle into a pretty impressive angle. I fitted a gizmo that holds the front forks and fitted the biggest chainring I could find on the fixed I use on there.

Sounds like a load of wahalla when you can just clamp the back wheel in a turbo job and get sweating.

I don't want to start anything, this is a genuine question.

Does anybody ever wear a helmet when riding rollers ?

I like the DCLane approach of surrounding yourself with domestic soft furnishings in case of an off but this would not be practical in a garage, for example.

Last year I went to the track cycling world cup at the 'lympik velodrome in Megalondon One. The riders spent a surprisingly long time on rollers warming up and made it look oh so easy. I took this picture of a French rider putting her hair in a bun while spinning away. I can *just about* do no-hands on my rollers, but hair care is out of the question.
