Hi All

I’ve just ordered a new bike with Shimano 105 group set 11 speed x2 11-32 with 700c wheels thru axels - I’d like to get a spare wheel & tyre set - probably a full gravel or full road combo to swap in and out - so here’s my “idiots” / rookie question mainly relating to the back wheel, re the cassette etc - how easy is it to change ?

Do I need a spare cassette etc or how do you do it ? Any help or directions re vids / tools much appreciated?

Can I do it or is it a bike shop job ? See online fellow enthusiasts talking about it all the time but really have no clue and are petrified @ the thought !

Any help much appreciated ^_^

First question is why a spare set ?

Wear the original set out first then think about it would be my suggestion .

Easy enough to swap cassette you just need the right tool to undo the lock ring and then do up again

This is an expensive thing to do.

New wheels, rotors, tyres, tubes and possibly a new cassette.

It's easy enough to swap cassettes - they're about £50 to buy if you don't.

You'd need a chain whip and a cassette locking tool though. Anyone can swap a cassette. Just look for videos on YouTube.

And a tool to put your rotors on as well.

And then you might have to realign your gears and calipers to work with both.

It's probably just easier to swap tyres and tubes over. Certainly a lot cheaper.

I assume the OP wants a set with slick road tyres and a set with chunky gravel tyres.

I have this for my gravel bike which doubles up as winter road bike. The OP's issue in this climate will be finding a reasonably priced set of thru axle compatible wheels. I got a set of sub £100 Prime wheels, lifeline rotors and 10spd cassette so I was well under £150 for the set up, but that was well pre the great covid parts shortage.

You either go the whole hog and have full wheel, tyres, cassette and rotors so its a quick swap. If you are having to get the tools out to say switch cassette over, its easier just to switch tyres.

what tyres are coming on the bike, as a sensible choice for both on and off road may mean you don't need a "spare" combo at all.

You want a pair of complete thru axel wheels including tubes and tyres and for the rear a cassette. If they are setup like that then swapping them over will be something you can do yourself without tools.

I have a second set of wheels for my gravel bike. The stock wheels I have set up for off-road riding with 40mm tyres. I have a set of DT Swiss E1800s for road riding. Both set-up tubeless with their own rotors and 11-32 cassette.
A set of wheels can be had for £100 from Merlin https://www.merlincycles.com/merlin-rda-1-disc-clincher-road-wheelset-700c-197256.html. I can't vouch for the quality.
11-32 cassette for £39 https://www.merlincycles.com/tifosi-hg-11-speed-cassette-250016.html
2 x center lock disc brake rotors for £33

Vittoria Terreno tyres in 38c £34 https://www.tweekscycles.com/uk/vit...aQZArgiGanXaYBZHphhoCkBkQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
2 x tubes £5 https://www.tweekscycles.com/uk/cube-700c-road-inner-tube-2012305/

So for roughly £211 you could have a second set of wheels.
If you are anywhere near Bristol, I could help you set them up as I have all the tools and have done it myself.

Many thanks all - as ever past experience and knowledge is gratefully revived so many “additional” add ons I’d not considered re changing wheels etc - I’ve opted for this on the bike when it arrives so I will get a feel for it and go from there many thanks again
