Many years ago I was driving a 4x4 through a forest to miss a huge dog-leg on a route to an isolated rural community. We passed a RATNA ZONA sign, which meant we were near a front line, but my colleague was from those parts and knew the woods, so we pressed on.
A mile or so later we both saw a wire stretched across the track between trees at mid-windscreen height. We saw it twinkling in the light a moment before contact so there was barely time to brake or even get off the throttle. My heart pretty much stopped there and then.
Poing! The wire snapped and was attached to nothing. It was one of the most intense seconds of my life. Whoever set it up as a practical joke did a simply marvellous job. Ha ha ha ha ha ha
We drove home the long way after our visit.
