So I was reading a blog of a guy who is currently cycling around the world, he is currently in Turkey and by his own admission he wasn't particularly fit when he started. I thought this was pretty impressive.

I know have the bug to do this and apart from funds I can't see why not. Does anyone have any thoughts, anyone done something similar?

I part read a blog about a 60 odd year old lady who without any experience bought a bike and all the kit and set off on a very long journey, cant recall where but it was a long trip. She had a massive technical issue at one point that totally foxed her....a puncture ^_^....anyway i think her bike was stolen in Bulgaria so she bought one off the shelf from a local cycle shop and just plodded on. She could be anywhere by now. That the beauty of this crazy hobby of ours , you dont need to be fit or experienced, the hardest part is actually setting a date and doing it.

Hi Andy.
Have you toured before? If not then my suggestions would be to make a few short tours first, you'll learn a fair amount and find what products / clothing / bike setup works for you - we're all different and all have different needs - I've met people on the road carrying a didgeridoo and an accordion! So to start keep it simple and if enjoyed subsequent tours will soon increase in distance & duration.

Read Crazy guy on a bike for inspiration. But do what Mark said, and try a few short tours first. I have done many of one week, one of 3 weeks and one of 4 weeks...... not at all interested in going round the world though. Across the US is a long term goal, as is cycling to Istanbul....

That was also shown on TV over five consecutive nights the very week before I departed on my U.S. Route 66 tour (2008). I’d self-proposed 100 mile days - the same as Mark Beaumont had rode, so watching it the week before helped erase a slight shade of doubt I'd been having.

We did our first tour in the June before we set out. Got totally addicted to it, and by February of the following year had quit our jobs, sold everything we owned and set out 3 years ago to do something similar. The trip was aborted eventually but I can tell you that you don't need to be very fit when you start, you will get fitter along the way.

Funds (& health) tend to be the limiting factors, and I guess children as well, but this couple have just finished a 20 month tour of South America with their 2 young sons.

Couldn't agree more, that website shows you anybody can cycle anywhere, it's great for firing up enthusiasm.

USA and Istanbul are to-do for me too.

That's pretty much exactly my experience too (apart from the aborted trip). Cycle touring can very quickly become addictive!
