I am planning to ride the Cumbrian coast in the next few weeks and will be using Cycle Route 72. I have heard reports that the route is closed at Sellafield. To confuse matters I have also heard that although work is ongoing the route is not closed! Does any one know what the situation on the ground really is?

many thanks

As far as I know that short section of the route was reopened a few weeks ago after resurfacing. It's just around the corner from me at work (though off my normal route so I haven't been on it since) so I'll have a ride down tomorrow and check it for you

Even if it was still shut, there is a detour available which is not ideal as it goes the long way round and includes a couple hills, but is usable.

That would be very kind. I've looked at the alternatives and I really would prefer to keep off the roads as much as possible - this is one of the attractions of this section of the route.

I rode down it after work today as far as the Calder rail bridge (the extent of the April closure) and the route is fully open as far as I can see. They've resurfaced one section next to the Sellafield marshalling yard which is why it was shut (along with fitting a new security fence).

Oh that is great news! Thank you so much for checking it out. The sections close to the coast are dear to hearts and we are looking forward to this section from Seascale and the ones further north.
