Thanks jefmcg - I learn something new every day.
You're welcome.

They were started by @dellzeqq and run for many years. Now the baton has been passed on. And everyone should go on at least one. Including @vickster

I did the Herschel route last year, very good and very leafy all the way to Paris with about 2 miles of city riding right at the end.

The off road bit about 8 miles outside Paris was worrying, if it had rained that would have been a mare.

Bikes get their own line in the car queues - for both outward and return

No doubt that's the normal situation. It certainly wasn't the case on the day we were there. We were all put in the queue with foot passengers, and then decided we shouldn't be there. Other cyclists were also in the queue alongside foot passengers. We were near the front, so I don't know if they got messed about in the same way. Some had no van to put the bikes in, so I've no idea what they would have done.

I only mention it as a cautionary word. Hopefully they learned from the mistakes they made with us. Maybe we just had a one off experience. We only went outward, so I can't comment on the return.
