Route needed - Newcastle to/from Sunderland

Hi,

I need to look at a route to take me to/from Newcastle high Heaton - Sunderland Hendon
Not a commute, to my dads.

I know to use the Tyne pedestrian tunnel but can't think of the best route (on a roadie) to the Wearmouth bridge

Any advice?

There are a couple good routes to the Tunnel, but after that my knowledge is over.

Would you be willing to use cycle paths?

Depends what your after, there's a few routes to choose from.

If its a nice day and you have time, I would follow the river through Tyne Dock and up to the coast then it's a straight road all the way to Monkwearmouth.

Otherwise through Jarrow, Boldon and on to Sunderland which is more direct, again there are a few different options.

I am pretty much OK from Heaton to the ped tunnel, it's from there on.

I will no doubt need to use the cycle paths now and again.

My pref would be down past the dog track, just trying to figure a direct-ish route from the south tunnel entrance across to the cleadon road

You may be better off using the tyne bridge to get onto the other side of the river then using then using the a184 which will take you right to hendon. ive been on the a184 and its ok .

Heres a couple of options to look at. Personally I would avoid the A184 between the Tyne Bridge and Boldon, but thats just my opinion.

There are slight variations you could make as you go along. As I said earlier if you fancy a longer ride take the coast road, maybe get the ferry over.
Hope its of some help.

Cheers - really appreciated
I'll look at these closer on my pc as the iPad is jumpy as hell on these mapping sites.

I have ridden all the roads south of the Tyne for the last 10 years and would probably go for the second of the two above addict. The greyhound road can be really tough when the wind is not in your favour - which is obviously every time you go out on a bike.
Going via Down hill puts in a little hill between Boldon and Hylton but it is not too bad. Obviously if the wind is from the NW I would go via the greyhound stadium. I have never ever experienced this direction of wind in ten years of commuting!
Addict's route from the tunnel to Boldon is a good one - some short steeps but nothing much. There are some little paths you can use to make it less roadie but the roads he has used are not too busy and I think you would do well to follow it.
I have done this route slightly quieter -
might be worth doing?

I cycle from Boldon to Ashbrooke in Sunderland every day and Addict's route is the one I would use too, except I would avoid the Wheatsheaf roundabout. When you get to the Toyota garage turn right then left http://goo.gl/maps/6oMYW and go past the Stadium of Light. Follow the road through Sheepfolds and it will bring you out onto the Wearmouth Bridge. From here you can go down John Street then up past Mowbray Park and the Civic Centre to Hendon. There's a lot of construction work going on where Sunderland Bowling used to be and it's all a bit of a mare for the forseeable future.
I usually have a tailwind along past the dogtrack on a morning and ALWAYS have a headwind home, but it's downhill so it's not so bad.

Cheers guys n gals, sounds like darned good advice to me.
I'll let you know when I give it a shot.
Looks to be a decent 34 mile round trip stopping half way to grab a cuppa and a bickie or two with the old man, although it may scare the bejaysus outta him seeing me in head to toe Lycra again as the last time it was a leotard and I was playing a Panto Dame!

Thanks AddictFreak.
I did route #1 today, great one- just what I wanted.
Didn't get all the way to my dads as I woulda been late back ( taking my son to hospital appt) but got to McD's by the Stadium (yummy latte) and averaged 17.1 and only a coupe of stop to re-orientate and two wrong turns but all-in-all a great route.
Wind was a barsteward coming back along by the dog track and again along the coast road

Glad to be of help.
The Wheatsheaf junction is a bit of a nightmare at the moment as Carole said earlier, but nothing you can't handle I'm sure.
