Hi there
I've been trying to plan a route with ridewithgps. Everytime I move the blue dot to another street, it completely changes the route already made. Also, how do I get ride of the small red line (it looks like a mini route on a street)

Thanks

Contact RideWith GPS explaining your problem. They usually reply quite promptly.

I use RWGPS a lot and so should be able to help.

You do not say if you are planning on PC or phone.

I do not know how you got 2 routes on one map. If you get constant faults it is easier to clear the map and start again. I am using my phone at the moment and to clear the map you select the 3 dots, top right of the map and select clear map.

I am not sure what you mean about moving the blue dot. But if you look at youtube there are a lot of RWGPS Tutorials.

If I can help PM me.

I presume it's the short red line you want rid of? You're correct, it is a mini route which you probably accidentally created. It happens. If you have a paid account choosing the "selection tools" or similar should allow you to highlight and delete it. However as you're already a little frustrated if it's not causing an issue ignore it. In your image it shows "Start Trial" suggesting you're using the free version. You may not have the selection tools option available.

The auto-route change is frustrating and something I've never fully controlled but I do have a work around. I'm sure someone will be along to explain how to prevent this. It will be connected to a setting asking RWGPS to choose quiet roads, traffic free, possibly a shorter journey.

My solution is this. Rather than drag the blue dot I click on the road I want to use to create a way point. I then click on the next spot I want to reach. Usually RWGPS follows the road I want but occasionally will route me, for example, on to a nearby cycle path. Last night for instance I was planning a route where the road and canal ran parallel to each other. RWGPS routed me on to the towpath, I wanted to use the road.

The work around is to create a way point just beyond the spot where RWGPS chooses to use a different route. This will force RWGPS to go the way you wish.

I notice you're using Google maps for planning. Can I suggest you use RWGPS Cycle as the problem you describe seems to happen more often in Google maps. I usually toggle between the two map types but do most of the actual route planning in RWGPS Cycle. You can toggle between the two by choosing the drop down menu in top right corner of the map view. Toggling between the two will not affect the planning you have already done.

On computer it's a little easier than phone, if the route doesn't go where you want it to go then click undo to go back to last way point, the on the right change the option from 'follow road' to 'direct' so you can plot as the crow flies. Change back to follow roads when you are past the troublesome area.

If you want to retain the route created so far, don't move the dot. Leave it where it is and click where you want to go next. In this way you will get a succession of control points through which your route will pass. That's what "add to route" mode does. (Mode controls on R of screen)

If you want to change the route created in this way, switch to "control point" mode. Then you can drag points around. The route will stay tethered to the existing control points except the one you are dragging.

Use a proper route planner like cycle.travel

That often does the same thing IME. I find I have to create extra via points either side of the section I want to change

I don't think tribalism over route planners will get us far.

I've used RWGPS and Cycle.travel a lot and I rate them both. They are very similar.

The main difference is probably how they automatically choose routes between two distant points. They have different "personalities". However I don't really use that feature much as I like to micro-manage my routing so I always end up with lots of control points / via points / whatever they are called and the planner only gets to choose how to get from point to point and because they are close there's generally only one option.
