For touring - Map - conceptual planning in head - overall distance on MS Autoroute (add 10% so it is doable in time allowed) - day planning generally map on the floor of the the tent the night before and pick a suitable line and probable end of day - almost certainly different by the time ive reviewed it a few times at cafe stops

I work out a route using bikeroutetoaster and roughly follow the pink line using michelin maps as an overview.Route planning is great but can get all consuming. When you actually rock up there and see that many southern French towns (for example) are built on hills, you end up using maps as a work around.

I've use the mapmyride website for ideas on various routes. Free to signup for as well. It lets you export any routes you find to gpx or kml format for use with your Garmin or looking on Google Earth. You can also record any routes you take using your mobile.

I've also used the cycle streets app, which isn't too bad either.
