I've got a one-off ride through London from Victoria to Euston (getting a new bike home :-D ) - anyone have suggestions for a route?

Google maps suggest Victoria St, then along the embankment and up Kingsway. It will be Sat evening, so not ideal conditions to be on the road, but I guess not much worse than Manchester.

I find cycle.travel great, and have often used it for rides in London. It's free.

Google maps is, imho, rubbish for cycling

The way I used to go when I did that commute was:

out the back of the office into Palace Street
right at the end (T- lights) into Buckingham gate
left into the park and past Buck house and down The Mall
through Traf Squ and exit up Charing X rd (the only crappy bit, but all slow traffic and lights)
Right onto Shaft Avenue
(this next bit seems a bit indirect, but avoided crap junction across New Oxford street and then trying to turn right off Bloomsbury street / Bedford Square into Montague place)
Right onto High Holburn
left up Museum street
right onto Gt Russel Street
then left onto Montague street and left again at the top on the cycle lane of Montague place
then right into Malet street cycle lane, all the way up to
right into Byng place and
left into Gordon Street all they up to Euston road
across the light then drops you at the side entrance to Euston

obviously a tad harder to navigate on the hoof than the embankment. I didn't like Victoria street and Parliament square though.

Google maps is awful and will be a nasty ride on a Saturday evening.

If not in a rush, I'd wheel the bike against the one-way north on Buck Pal Road, then ride ahead to join Cycleway 3 on Birdcage Walk, then enjoy the sightseeing until you reach Blackfriars Bridge and take the signposted left onto C6, follow that until it meets C27 near the Post Office Museum at Mount Pleasant, then follow C27 to the signposted right turn onto C10 to Euston. If you see the lefthand S bend on paving near the Senate House, you've gone too far.

The Mall, Trafalgar Square and join C10 in the Covent Garden area would be much shorter, but is a pig to navigate and busy on a Saturday evening. You could turn left off the Embankment just before Waterloo Bridge to reach C10 but I'm not sure how good the signs are now because I've not done it recently.
