Incidental I know, but your video also highlights the utter worse-than-uselessness of that eastbound cycle lane over Vauxhall Bridge.

I don't see what the problem is, you could argue that your shadown is caused by the street lighting. And when the driver did overtake they gave you plenty of room.

did i do anything wrong? thats the problem, he had a go at me for not being in my lane, where i consistently stayed in the same lane, made no indication to change lane.

The bus lane - was it not in operation? Surely Royal Mail vans cannot use bus lanes that are operational legally? Or can they?

I wonder if the van decided to undertake on the bus lane, but missed the lights because you were overtaking the other cyclist approaching the second set of lights. He wanted you to hug the gutter so he could force his way through the junction.

BTW - my previous post on reflection is a bit unfair to Royal Mail drivers. I am sure that many of them are fine upstanding drivers, it is just I have seen some shocking driving by some Royal Mail vans in the last 18 months.

Is the driver on about what appears to be a strange cycle lane that appears almost out of nowhere at the conflict point?

The bus lane was in operation, he shouldn't have been in it. Your statement on what happened could well be true. but only he knows what he was trying to do.

Quite possibly, but i never use that as the left lane is used for turning left and going straight on. there is no point inviting an overtake there.

Lots of them here in Cambridge. Generally speaking they're courteous cyclists and a pleasure to share the road with. The blokes in the vans are dreadful though.

On the other end of the spectrum we have this

If they drive like this against other lorries, us cyclists stand no chance!

The lost art of writing letters of complaint

Write a polite but firm letter to Adam Crozier, CEO of Royal Mail, detailing exactly what happened (dates, location, critical exchanges - the letter mustn't be emotional). Clearly mark the letter as 'STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL', explain that you expect a response in 7 working days, and that you intend to take further action. Don't forget to send it at least by Recorded Delivery.

And whilst you are at it, you might as well report it to the police (once again by letter and to where it is most effective) within the week.

Just watched the video - you have reasonable evidence for a stern warning at least. It was clever to repeat exactly what he said at the end, since it is highly unlikely you made it up.

Probably best to temporarily disable comments since it could be used legally. Make sure you are certain of the time, and the date. This way, one can logically deduce that the van was on a bike lane at 6 as they ought to have recorded the time they arrived.

You may not have enough here to become financially independent (unless he grabbed your arse) but you have enough to warrant some action being taken.

I don't think you'll have much luck either as the vid is not too clear. However, if the driver does this sort of thing often, you might well help support other cyclist's previous (un-recorded) complaints by now having a video.

Chap, Adam Crozier gets thousands of letters a week. This one will go in the round file.

Gaz, the video doesn't really show anything that is reprimandable, however it is worth complaining to the fleet manager and local depot nevertheless. Something may happen. If you don't complain, nothing will happen. The cyclist at about 1.30 at the junction on the left looks like he/she was aware of the situation - potential witness perhaps?

Mick, that's a Nine Elms driver on collections.
The van will have a number at the top on the back, this number is used to identify the route and driver on a specific day. Eg-SW12 OR SW5

Collectons Manager
Royal Mail London South
53 Nine Elms Lane
LONDON SW8 5BB

Make a complaint, they'll have to have a word with the driver. They'll still be able to trace him by the reg number.

The drivers have all been warned about driving in the bus lane so he'll get a telling off just for that.

Hope that helps .

Does the video actually show evidence of the van in the bus lane though? The bus lane appears to end at the first hatched junction after the right signalling van appears. The left hand lane isn't a bus lane beyond that hatched junction. When you look round behind you at the van, it isn't a bus lane any more.
