how about this Pashley Royal mail bike
Lost in the post, probably....oh dear something went wrong, l will try again
The one in the picture is not how I remember them, must be a modern incarnation. The ones I used to see the posties riding were proper old-school men's roadsters.
Is this more like the ones you remember?

AtoB have this short article on the Mailstar and UK postal bikes
I’ve see these on sale at the Lincoln Antiques Fair for around £100 each but never been tempted owing to them weighing so much.
would do for longer distances with a better saddle
I see what you mean but I live in Sheffield - allegedly built on seven hills. There’s a local saying which goes something like this,Weight isn't a big issue if you live in town and want it for shopping/ errands (it would become an issue if there was a 1/7 hill between you and the shops though)
My Elephant bike weighs 23kg, about the same as a Boris bike. It's very pleasant to ride over short distances -and would do for longer distances with a better saddle. I did nearly 10 miles a few weeks ago taking some stuff to the dump and then doing some shopping on the way back.
