Just cycle over to the nearest Land Rover specialist where you will find a big heap of rusted junk parts that have been taken off Landies.

@MontyVeda, how go your nuts?

I'll try to source some from the scrappy. My BIL may also have some knocking about... there's lots of rusty looking junk on his farm.

No rush though... the table/bench is currently on paper. It's my next project after the tool caddy/hostess trolley, which is currently four legs waiting to be mortised.

If you're patient, simply immerse them in salt solution - that'll probably take a few days. Adding a little bleach ought to speed things up. If they come galvanised, dunking them in vinegar for a couple of hours will remove the zinc coating - then they can get the brine treatment.
Couldn't you stick them in that Large Haydron Collider thingy you get to play with?

I suspect that would get the zinc galvanisation off

M8 (were 13mmAF at some point in history....)

Just managed to get them off a tandem. Lurking under the BB as clamps to the split/adjustable BB shell used to tension the front chain. God knows how they got in this state as they actually undid ok and rest of the bike is in good condition. Why these two nuts look like they have been at the bottom of a canal for a few years is anyone's guess.....
