Anyone either got these on their bike or built wheels with them and if so how reliable are they? A friend has asked me to lace a couple of Hope hubs into a pair of workhorse winter rims and he's keen on the Ryde Sputnik but until now I've never heard of them. They look ok but I can't find many reviews.

I've not had them but I know of them as very tough, relatively cheap, but heavy rims that are suitable for touring.

Very strong and stiff, albeit slightly heavy. Very easy to build with and it doesn’t lose its shape when you’re cranking up the nipples.

Braking surface wider and thicker too if running rim brakes.

Best suited to loaded touring or commuting.

Used the 26" version for loaded touring for a few years a while ago when they were Rigida.
Great rims

Got them on my Cross Check and did have them on my retro bike when it was geared (Rigida at the time). The retro wheels were built by Richard at Henry Burton's - If John and Richard recommended them then they're good rims.

Thanks everyone. I knew there'd be one or two on CC who'd come across them. Now I know about the Rigida connection that's put my mind at rest. I've built quite a few wheels with Rigida rims. Thanks again 👍

The Sputnik is a legendary winter rim. It's a tank, built to take a beating from potholes and curbs. They're heavy, but that's the trade-off for being nearly indestructible. A perfect, reliable choice for a workhorse wheelset. You can't go wrong lacing them to Hope hubs.

I went right off the Rigida brand after I first built one, it seemed to be at upper end of diameter tolerance because it was a bear to get a tyre on - a make & model of tyre that went on reasonably easily on the Mavic Open Pros that I was generally using at the time.

I have Sputnik rims on a dynamo hub wheel built by spa 5 years ago, excellent rims in my opinion. I been so happy with them I ordered a new rim and spokes when I rebuilt the back wheel after a hub flange broke on me.
As others have said they are heavy but if it’s a workhorse of a rim your after then you’ll be pleased.

Good to know. I got a text today to say the rim is ready for me to pick up tomorrow. I'll build the wheel over the weekend so my friend can have it on Monday. I'll post a pic if anyone's interested. Thanks to all who have contributed to the thread 👍

Built the wheel this morning. Not a 'sexy' rim but ticks a lot of boxes. I used black spokes but I'd got silver as an alternative. Finished wheel looks neat. I'll drop a pic on later but off to do the weekly shop now 🙁

They build well and I've had zero issues with my Zac 2000's laced to XT hubs. I wore the rear rim out about 18 months ago and just replaced the rim.
