What a horrific news story. Presumably someone angry about mountain bikers using that area who may have expressed anger about it before and actually spent time setting that trap up so very motivated. It could easily have killed someone so really should have a fairly extreme sentence if caught.

That is attempted murder in my book, someone has planned and carried out that attack with full knowledge of the outcome, no doubt the Police won’t even bother pursuing the investigation too much, despite the horrific injuries to the cyclist, I’ll bet there’s DNA evidence at the ends of the wire where it was fixed in place, that deserves a hefty prison sentence

These incidents have been surfacing for quite a while and they are not on private property but on reserves and public land. It is also unlikely to be work of hooligans or local thugs who would not be caught dead enjoying the pleasures of nature.

It is likely the work of misguided individuals who are overly protective of nature or not keen to share the environment.

It can happen by accident. I got caught when a hoolie of a wind was blowing a 6' long strand of bramble across the road at exactly neck height. I didn't see it because it was just where the road plunged from brilliant sunlight into a gloomy tunnel of trees and my eyes hadn't adjusted. Fortunately the passing traffic had mashed the worst of the thorns off so my neck wasn't cut as badly as that, but I still arrived home with a bloodstained T shirt.

Ye Gods! What kind of maniac would do something like this?!?

I am minded of something from my long-ago youth: I friend had a mini-bike (a frame with small wheels and a lawnmower engine) that he would ride on a loop that was partially in his back yard and the rest on railroad property. Someone (presumably from the railroad) stretched a length of cable across his loop, and he ran smack into it one day. It cut into his abdomen and destroyed his spleen. He lived, but spent many months in a hospital bed.
