A fifteen hand filly? Have you got a paddock?

I take it that you are doing an exchange. I'm surprised that they still take place as they seem to have been abandoned by most schools with safeguarding (I hate the term) being at the forefront of every institution's thoughts.

You've got the Internet so you can use Google translate if you get really stuck with communications.

You can also get online radio stations in French.

You might be pleasantly surprised by her competence at speaking and understanding English.

only half the exchange…

dd volunteered as she didn't like the idea of someone having to stay with a teacher…

15 is three years beyond our parenting experience (eldest is 12), so should be interesting. she looks a lot older than 15 too…

Yeah, we've all heard that excuse before.

Une fille de 15 ans va rester chez nous pendant 5 jours. Au secours!

Is there any way you get communicate with her parents to get the rules of the game? She's 15 - she'll make every effort to be sweet, mature and charming to convince you that she's allowed to do this, that and the other at home. Better to get the parent's rules and then if she want to go outside these limits she'll have to phone home and get a parent to ok it with you.

"Je parle francais comme une vache espagnol"

Radio - for homesickness purposes only. (Nostalgie and Skyrock for you, gawd knows what for a quinze year old!)

I forsee the most educated girl in the history of 'The Alecs' - will five days of Babelfish be long enough to translate the team's palmares into understandable form?

It will be great for you all.

You may be lucky, but the French are the only people in Europe worse at learning and using other people's languages than we are!

They do still generally teach their youngsters how to behave in other people's homes though, so you'll be unlucky if you have any issues in that area.

Yet another French teenager who'll go home with a scots accent I suppose. (Tit for tat - I still have a provencal accent when I speak french, which I picked up when I was a teenager).

We've just come to the end of a 8 day exchange yesterday. It was really enjoyable - this one was probably the best. It wasn't my first by any means ... it must be my 4th I've taken part in - it is harder with an age gap but finding things they can do where language isn't too much of a barrier like playing on the wii or simple board games gives them a chance to have fun without placing too much emphasis on conversation or mucking around on a skate board. Try to limit communication with home - that is when they get most homesick. The worst one constantly phoned home even in the middle of the night and had to get her mobile topped up multiple times. The teachers eventually persuaded her not to contact them more than once a day by text.
