That's a bit puzzling then. Which saddle is the most comfortable out of the 5? Even so, there can't be that much difference between them all if you keep them as they are.

The Bontrager the most comfortable and the only one I do long rides on, the other bikes are used for shorter rides normally.

You have to remember my bum has been on saddles for over 50 years.

My experience? Stopped riding bicycles in 1966, using a Brooks. Re started riding bicycles in 2015 and it seemed right to use a Brooks, It has just done its job with no problems. I seem to be lucky that way.

Surely your rear will be in the same position.
Its position relative to pedals and therefore legs varies with seat post angle - this also changes the nose shape you need. The shape of it varies slightly as you lean forwards more, with sit bones prominence changing and bits between and forwards being lower.

I knew after 30 miles that my saddle was wrong. I tried a few saddles in 2 different shops by sitting on them on the stairs or a stool and moving around on them. I got a selle royalle and very happy whether I'm leaning down or sitting up. If I hadn't found one I was going to get my sit bones measured.

I'm having problems with my Surley, after years of riding MTB and Hybrid this ride is very different , I did 40 miles on Sunday around London , didn't exactly kill me but another 10 may have done , I've seen one type in a LBS , about 60 , good idea to be able to trial them , I'll ask ,

The good news is that as you get hardened up to the miles, saddles seem to get more bearable. A novice will find even a Charge Spoon uncomfortable and will be rushing off to buy one of those awful gel saddles.

Yes but if you do the long miles on a saddle that's fundamentally wrong for you, you can do quite nasty damage no matter how hard-arsed you are by squishing the soft and sometimes-soft(!) bits.

one of those awful gel saddles.
That sounds irrational. Sometimes gel is a useful material for synthetic saddles. I think all my saddles except the Brooks have some gel of some description on some part of them. Often posh saddles have gel but it's called something else like multidensity closed-cell foam because of this irrationality, similar to how some sprung saddles get marketed as having a rail suspension system.

I also find it baffling how many people reject sculpted saddles in favour of something too hard for them, then won't ride far without padded underwear... which makes more sense to kit out: do you have more saddles or underpants?

You can take an expensive chance on a Brooks saddle which is loved by many.

Or you can take a £20 shot on a charge spoon, also loved by many.

I have both saddles and they are both brilliant.

I would go for the charge spoon in your position.

I like padded shorts when going any distance. They don't have seams that rub unlike panties
Except for the seams around the edge of the pad (including one at the front which is often in a delicate place for men  ) and between the panels of the rest of the shorts? Flat-seam and seamless underpants are available... but there are a frustrating number of shops which call things seamless when they're only flat-seamed.
