I still have the original saddles on both my bikes. A hybrid and a CX.
Any I've had before , I never changed saddles.

Maybe it's to do with size and weight.
I'm not carrying any excess pounds.

I think most people change their saddles. That will be the reason that manufacturers dont splash out on a decent saddle to begin with.

After my test ride last night I will say that I greatly enjoy the new saddle! It is a Bontrager Sport. Definitely worth trying a new one if you aren't comfortable with the current, this is like night and day for me!

The original saddle on my Wiggins was made by Torquemada - or at least my derriere thinks so. But it's designed for junior bottoms, not for that of an adult female.

Swapped it for a Charge Ladle, which is miles better.

Whilst I was in Bangor yesterday, I called at the bike shop to have my posterior measured. My pressure points are 138 so he gave me a Fabric saddle to try on a 60 day return basis. The saddle is actually 142 but he said it should not matter slightly bigger. I fitted it on my Cube and am going for a ride in half an hour . He also said I need to do several rides before I decide. The saddle is £54.99 but he will do a deal if I buy two more for my other bikes.

I agree about the 20 mile mark. That's when you know whether the saddle is right for you.

Can you get to a bike shop that has an arseometer? If not and you want to know what a saddle will feel like before you put it on your bike, I was told this by one of the mechanics at Winstanley Bikes in Wigan :

Put the saddle on the stairs in the shop with your feet on the floor and lean forward like you would do on a bike.

I was in Halfords once and noticed one of those stools on wheels that are used to reach high shelves.
I used that to try sitting on all their different saddles and found one that is perfect for me. It is their own brand but has Salle Royale written underneath. I have this saddle on both my bikes now plus a third one that I take on holiday to use when I hire a bike.

The saddle needs to be wider than the pressure points aka sit bones else you'd be falling off one side or the other or both and taking the saddle up the rear. Typically 35-50mm wider for plastic IIRC and 55-70 for leather to allow for the 10mm support rail you shouldn't sit on/by, but varies by exact design and by how the manufacturer measures it.

I`ve never swapped my saddles either and I regularly use three bikes each with different saddles. TBH, I have no idea what the actual saddles are, one is on a Viking Giro d`Italia, then a Cannondale Synapse Tiagra and an Argon 18 Krypton. None of them give me a sore bum maybe I`m just lucky!
