I also heard that some gadgets are incorporating night charging mode detection, recognising that the phone is not going to be moved till morning so it switches to a better slower charge.
Of couse, once 100% is reached, the switch mode charger switches off as per usual.

I don't know which gadget that is but I do recall Samsung had a laptop setting that limited battery charge to 80% or so, thus doubling longevity.
iPads do, or did declare 100% charge at 90 or so percent, and trickle charge to a real 100%.

Yes i am a cautious sort but have no problem leaving my tabs or AA/AAA battery chargers charging overnight or when i am out. Often a must with the latter as i use a slow charge to prolong battery life. Just use reputable products, obviously take notice of press stories with regard to particular product issues. And don't try to be clever saving a few pennies by getting lights and chargers from funny foreign sources.
In terms of lights/recharging, I have iZone rechargeable USB lights.
I usually charge them in work the following morning after a night ride.
Then if they blow up, they are next to me on my desk and I get some time out of the office until the fire brigade arrive, it's a win win!

I turn all our chargers off before bed and before leaving the house unoccupied.

LiOn are nasty when they set on fire, but more than that the chargers plugged into the mains are another potential failure point.

Rather keep an eye on things when charging rather than risk a house fire when all my family are in bed..

Irritatingly, I now have a couple of bike light with none removable batteries.
That would be all fine and well if they actually put in a decent size battery.

Well of course they don't.
Because they want you to wear them out.
And buy another.
The majority of those lights will be landfill while the LED has only got into its early childhood. If that.
Of course the other reason they are so small is because there are lots of cyclists these days who like to brag to their friends co-riders about how they can shove their rear lights up their anus. And how bright they are.
In fact i can exclusively reveal that I'm in the advanced design and marketing phase of a product that you can do just that with and it is bright enough to shine from your rear innards through any amount of arse blubber.
Hence you save the considerable weight of a mount.
There is i am convinced a massive market for this. Untold riches here I come.

Price?

And where do you put the charging lead?

Price north of £100 I guess for will be a premium product. For a few months.

The charging lead will go in the same place so that it can be whipped out with a theatrical flourish to be plugged into their Shoreditch hot desk.

Built in charging lead then?

Presume it'll give the user a "warm feeling" because they use it.

I agree that their batteries are pathetic, especially when cold weather shortens battery life, but it seems like an increasing number will run directly from an external USB battery pack, so there is a way to continue.

I know you were being helpful mjr, but that is of course a sad criticism of the things isn't it?

For an add-on external battery pack is hardly compact and faff free.

And rather kills the idea that the things are so so compact.

Rather reminds me of that old 60s or 70s joke about someone who had produced a super compact telly - that ran off two car batteries.

I'll be sticking to my collection of rechargeable AA powered front lights, including some nice inexpensive smarts, Hope Vision 1, and a nice thing from Lidl that can power me through a Dynamo for about £6.50.
