I say tomarto and you say tomayto, if thats the case, why do we say potayto instead of potarto?
The spelling is to try and show the different sound^_^
It seems there are loads of words that we say differently or sound the same but mean different things. Why has this come about? Its a complicated language, english.

They are called homophones and homographs. No idea why it's came about though.

Brougham some say sounds like broom, while some would say bruffam?

Mint, lint, hint, pint.

Pint is the oldest English word in the group, hence the unusual vowel sound. A lot of the strange irregularities are due to the fact that we have been invaded so many times and as a result our language Isa compound of many others.

It's a bit like the story of two English writers having tea together and one said to the other "would you please pass the sugar" he then said "do you know that sugar is the only word in the English language spelt SU but pronounced SH" The other one then said "are you sure"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
