So I'm back to considering the Raspberry Pi as a means of connecting our stack of USB drives to our home network.

Unless anyone has any better ideas...

Other than my great suggestion above, you will find the pi to be lacking power and frustrating in equal measures, I own two myself.
You would be far better off looking at apc imho better spec and shipping with Andriod just plug the HDMI into your TV and you have a nice little usable box complete with usb

Get a western digital mybook, its a small NAS device you plug into your router, however it runs Linux and there is a community which has evolved to hacking it and increasing functionality.... you can easily configure it so you can attach additional USB devices to it. As it runs Linux you can use it as a web server, print server, file server, media server, backup server, bit torrent server and so much more.
You can see what its capable off at the following URL.... great little flexible devices

I've just fetched a MyBook for work and am quite impressed. I guess I'd need to transfer our photos and music onto it and leave the old drives as redundancy backup.

I've had my eye on the little Android sticks for a while. At the moment I have the choice between CTC membership or an APC stick

You can transfer your pictures and photos if you choose to do so but you do not need to, the my book hacks permit it to read through its USB as well so you can just plug in your USB and go if you want. I have an external usb plugged into one of mine all the time.
I also have it configured to rsync my pictures to drop box for extra redundancy.
Awesome little devices specially when you read what they can do on that URL I provided.

I've had a proper look now and yes, when they are available one of these will be perfect! I'll just stack up the drives behind the telly with the APC box sat atop them!
