I am planning to cycle from Bilbao to Santiago de Compostela in May 2008 over 7 - 10 days following the Camino route.
We fly into Santander on 30 May and out of Santiago on 10 June.

At the moment there are 2 of us planning to go. I would like a slightly bigger group - maybe 4 or 5.
To give an idea of who we are. We are from Belfast. We are both male. I'm 49 and my friend is 40. Neither of us are particularly religious but it is a trip we have both always wanted to do. For us, the priority will be having fun and hopefully a lot of laughs along the way.
If you are interested in joining us please get in touch.

We are both reasonably fit but not obsessive cyclists and anyway I would prefer to do this trip at an enjoyable pace that gives time to stop and enjoy the view etc.

It doesn't matter to us if you are 20 or 70, male, female or other - if you can stay upright on a bike for a few hours and enjoy a laugh you are welcome to join us.

Cheers

I am not in a position to come with you, but my wife and I walked about 100 miles of the Camino about five years ago. We had wonderful holiday. There is a fantastic feelilng of cameraderie between the pilgrims and you get to see quite out of the way bits of Spain, with the scenery changing daily (even when walking).

In short, I am sure you will have a great time!

are you camping or hotelling it?

What bike are you on...fast road bikes or tourers?

I'm in 2 minds...I might be able to do this...cost is an issue...

We are using ATB's because we are following the walkers path.

We will be doing around 30-35mpd. No big deal really.
We want to have time to take it easy and socialise with others
and generally have a good time.
I've done the head down cover as many miles as possible in a day type tours but I think on balance I like to notice which country I'm in.

So anybody up for it.

George please forgive my ignorance but what is an 'ATB' bike?

Also the 'walkers path'...is that suitable for riding on a road bike/tourer?

ATB = all terrain bike = mountain bike

No, the walkers path isn't suitable for a tourer.

Just in case this is interesting:

A friend's blog writing about his 11 day cycling trip on the Chemin de St Jacques (The Way of St James / El Camino) to Santiago de Compestala - sounds like a brilliant ride.

One branch of the trail goes by my garden near Geneva.

I don't think it's fair to say that a tourer would not be suitable.

I think a mountain bike would be better but I know people have done it on tourers and hybrids.
If there is a section which you don't feel comfortable riding you can always go on road for a bit or even walk.

In otherwords, just say 'yes' and join us.
You will enjoy it.

I have actually walked well over 100 miles of the walkers path and large chunks of it definitely aren't suitable for a Galaxy. For example one section that springs to mind goes through a boulder field, another goes between the vines in a vineyard. However, in many cases the road runs close to the walkers path.

The standard route for bikes and horses is slightly different to the walker's path.
