Old kent road, New Cross Lewisham...all gridlock. Tempers were pretty calm thou I think most drivers had just given in to the fact that they would be there for a fair few hours (took me 5 hours to travel 20 miles that way once by car).

Some really polite efforts to let bikes through (I was surprised) and only one frustrated driver revving his engine at the (blocked) lights.

Something Big had gone wrong in new cross and the area was closed

Very glad to be on the push bike (took 1hr.15mins), even motorcycles were stuck.

I came along Jamaica Road at around 5 - 5.30 and it was messed up too. I just assumed it was always like that as I usually hit it around 30 mins earlier.

The route from Blackheath to New Cross in a morning has been messed up every day since they dug up Creek Road in Greenwich to me too so I go through Greenwich and once I'm past the closed road, I tend to have a fairly quiet run into London Bridge.

it was total gridlock and mayhem.
The A2 at Deptford Bridge was cordoned off but could not see what was going on.

it was total grid lock from tower bridge to greenwich at 6pm. went up throgh the park and all was fine after that.

i really dont like filtering in traffic when it is that gridlocked.

some cyclists seem to have no awareness of side roads and pedestrians.

A couple of months ago there was a fire in one of the derelict properties on Deptford Bridge. Today was stage 2 in this burn down the block for the developers campaign and the building next door went up in flames. To add to the chaos, the Water people digging holes in the Greenwich end of Creek road appear to have ''discovered'' a gas leak which wasn't there before they caused it so they shut that road too. This second road closure was probably caused accidentally.

Here's a pic of the Deptford Bridge fire:

something tells me you dont think this was an accident then?

it's strange how derelict buildings mysteriously burn down when people want to develop them.

you been playing with the matches again?

The cyclist I was chatting with this afternoon outside Lewisham Tescos told me that the people who got their fingers burnt in the property speculation boom-bust were Lewisham College (they own the building alongside and want to develop the site).

I have 1 basic principle with this kind of thing: watch where the money goes.

I should add a 2nd: if you want to know who's been playing with matches, find who's got their fingers burnt....

If I lived in London again, I think I would have an iddy biddy car (Toyota IQ, or something like that) and a brompton so I could take it on the underground. I certainly wouldn't drive!

the road is still closed. Will it reopen before tomorrow?

With 2 main roads closed tomorrow's rush hour will be fun!

This reminds me of an episode of The Wire...

So that's one of the reasons it took me over seven hours to drive to Sheffield from south London. The majority of that time I was less than twenty miles from home. I had my bike in the back of the car and at one point was thinking I could've done it quicker by bike.
