I am thinking about buying a Satma, but wanted to know if anyone has one out there, and what your opinions are.
Also, I would like to know if it is possible to plot a route on the machine itself without having to connect up to a computer?

I bought the Satmap Active 10 Plus recently plus the bike mount,very impressed.
You can plot your routes directly without a computer.
You will need to buy maps as it only comes with a basic map, I bought a 'site centred map' this is where you decide the size of the maps coverage and where you want the centre to be,I decided on a 90km 1:25k Ordnance Survey square based on my home as the centre.

I have been looking at a satmap also, i think it is going to be the one for me. Does anyone know if it stores total miles cycled or just current trip miles cycled?

Had one, sent it back to Wiggle with a long list of software and hardware faults after being ignored by Satmap for several weeks. Had a refund without question - full marks to Wiggle. The only good bit was the bike mount - and that was by Rixen Kaul. Now using Viewranger on a Nokia 5800 - chalk and cheese.

I have one.
Build quality feels a bit flimsy, but no actual problems as yet and it's done a fair few miles on the MTB.
The downside is its very expensive. You need* to subscribe to their online routeplanner and, ideally, you need a SD map card for the area you're in.

IMO though, it's the best there is. The real beauty is that it's easy to use, even for a numpty like me.


* You don't have to, but it's actually extremely good value (relatively) as you get the whole of the UK in 1:25,000 scale to plan your routes on and you can upload to it to.
