I was really worried about dogs when I was in Greece last year. I'd heard loads of stories about them - turned out that they were mostly exaggerated (everyone in Greece told me not to worry and I didn't have any problems.) However, it did get me thinking about it. I experimented with one of these before leaving:

That wasn't very effective. Tried it out on a few locals around here that run to their gates barking at me whenever I pass - seems like you've got to be really close for them to be effective. It does work on cats, though

Now this is the business! I've tried it on the aforementioned animals and it's worked well - I also used it to good effect to clear two stray dogs out of the way as I was hurtling down a mountain. I'm not sure that it would work in your situation, though. I'd love to know what you guys think about it: would it enrage the animal further or would the shock of a sudden very loud noise frighten them away? I am a dog-lover by the way!

Folks, you don't have to declare whether you like dogs or not or whether you think it's all the owners, etc, etc.

Regardless of how I feel about something in other circumstances if it's chewing on me, or attempting to do so, then all bets are off.

i was walking the dog when he was attacked by a druggies pit bull lookalike, i tried pulling on its choke chain and punching it as hard as i could on the chest but to no affect. it only let go when another druggie stuck her finger up its bum. honest !

Yikes! I was attacked by a dog when I was a kid and it took me years to get comfortable round them, touch wood though I've not come across an uncontrollable wild dog bent on attack.

When I was a youth I had a paper round. Down one particular street there was a group of numpties who would wait for me to go past then release their dog at me.
I retaliated the second time they did this and never had a problem again.

Me and a couple of mates had these spud guns.

We filled the cartridge, not with potato but with flash powder. Loo paper for wadding and several caps to ensure ignition and blam!!!!! A 6" flash issued forth.

I rode up the street and could see them holding the dog and waiting for me. As I got close they again let it loose. I got to within 2' before I let it have it. I never saw it again.

Totally illegal I know but I was 16 year old who didn't want to be bitten again

I've owned dogs for years and i've been fortunate to end up with docile friendly ones. Funnily enough i've never trained any of them, perhaps some folk overtrain them and attacking moving objects is the dog's way of rebelling?
My main fear while out cycling is not being attacked by a dog while going at medium pace, but having one run out at me while travelling at speed. Once again it's the stupid owners who allow this to happen, if they know the dog is badly behaved then they should have it on a lead, not roaming free to attack someone. Perhaps i'm expecting too much of these idiots.

Anyway, a little video of something i have a fear of happening, though i don't go at their speed of course!

In the dog rescue circles it's known as DIMITTO ( dog is more intelligent than the owner). Over the years I have handled many dogs, most have been abused badly by their old owners, and a few have been aggressively defensive. Despite being forced to have three dogs destroyed, because we couldn't re-train them, I have only been bitten once, and even he didn't have the guts to break the skin of the alpha male (me). As has been said before it's the thrill of the chase that dogs really love, they want to run, that clip of Fenton shows a dog not hunting deer but chasing them (deer are especially bad as those little white tuffs of tail are like targets. becoming physical with a dog you don't know should be left as a last result.
The best command to use is no, shouted nice and loud (a few swear words will normally give your voice the right tone as well).

Something like the dog incident Accy posted happened to me once - and I was going fast. I was late for college and I was charging along, listening to music on my walkman. Then a dog that I'd noticed in the corner of my eye pulled free of his owner and ran in front of me gnashing his teeth and barking. I didn't have time to react - my front wheel went into his side and I went flying through the air, landing several metres away. Cars on both sides of the road stopped and ran up to me to check I was OK. The owner came over and apologised profusely. Amazingly, I got away with only a few scratches and a pair of broken but mendable glasses (I wasn't wearing a helmet by the way - nobody did in those days). As for the dog, it just trottted away apparently unhurt and really pleased with itself. My bike seemed OK at first, but as I rode off I noticed the front wheel was rubbing which I presumed I'd be able to sort out with a bit of makeshift truing. Turned out the frame was broken and the bike was a write off. The dog owner had to be threatened with legal action before he'd pay up. Then he came round with 80 quid which was enough for a second-hand Raleigh Pursuit (great bike!). The first day I cycled to college on it, passed the man walking his dog in the exact same place - dog tried to attack me again!! Jeez! Owner's response: hit the dog, or should I say whip the dog, several times with the lead really hard. I've been nervous of a repeat incident ever since. Fortunately it's never happened - in fact I've never had any accident whatsover since then.

In this instance, it was the savage, snarling dog that needed destroying ........and it was.

I don't know who I dislike more, nasty dogs or people that defend nasty dogs and I make no apologies for that. A feeling of dislike for these people that has developed from reading their opinions on dog attacks. To them there are no nasty dogs, only bad owners.

To bloody right, its not just the owners some dogs just shouldn't been seen. Why do you need a dog that's like a bloody tiger running around. Yes there are nice soft dogs that are suitable for our shores, some are just muscle bound attack dogs and shouldn't be allowed to reproduce.

The chavs will always buy the meanest looking dog to up their manhood and bugger the innocent kids that get mauled.

When did we become a nation that valued pets above children. Recently while on holiday in Devon it was shocking the number of dogs running around Dog Ban beaches, I had to protect the kids from at least two dogs that were over excited. If I'd had a gun I would have shot the bloody things.

If a dog chases you on your bike, stop, get off and stand with the bike between you and the dog.

If you'd prefer to try and outrun it, that's your choice, but you are more likely to get bitten that way.

My dog (Rottweiler) used to chase anything with wheels. I don't think he wanted to attack it I think he saw it as some sort of game but either way it's something I trained out of him very quickly. Even before I'd started cycling I'd put him on a short leash if I saw any cyclist/jogger etc in range.
I'm really not one to want to govern people but I kinda think maybe there should be some sort of compulsory training before people can have ANY kind of dog... Or animal for that matter
