Turn stuff off when you're not using it. And endlessly nag your kids to do the same. Ultimately (though it may take 20 years) they will see you were right

Have a secret 'thermostat war' with your family (I've widened the discussion to gas, so as not to be fuel-discriminatory)
) . You turn it down a degree or two at every opportunity. When you are out, they whack it back up. Then on your return, you lower it again.

Save on your bill by not overboiling your eggs. To do this, pop the egg in a pan of water, get in you car and drive away at 60 miles an hour. After three minutes phone your wife and ask her to take the egg out of the pan.

You can always rely on The Viz to come up with a top tip!

My older sister has her heating turned up way too high (thermostat set in the 20s). I told her that it was too warm. She denied it. I asked if she had the heating on in the summer? No - of course not! I pointed out that the average summer temperature in England is about 15.6 degrees so her home is often 5 or 6 degrees warmer in the winter than in the summer. Where's the sense in that!

PS Save time and energy by only boiling as much water in your kettle as you need. That's another thing my sister gets wrong - she'll spend 5 minutes boiling a full kettle to make just 1 hot drink.

setting the stat at 20 doesn't mean its 20 degrees when it stops calling for heat either. we have ours set at 18 and it switches off at a nice comfortable room temp. digital roomstats are a brilliant idea.

one of the best things for efficiency though is balancing the system. I have also split the house into 3 zones that are controlled independently by programmable stats, 2 port valves and a standard 2 channel controller. we also put a jumper on when needed.

heating went on , onto timer , on 21st December last year and was off by mid feb. we had an hour boost occasionally before December but not often.

trying to get the kids to turn lights off though is a :banghead: event though.

Get some LED bulbs, they're great! Just make sure you get ones with SMD's (surface mount diodes) as opposed to the older 5mm bulb shaped LED.

I bought four 4 watt LED bulbs to replace four 40 watt halogen bulbs, and they're just as bright. They cost around £15 to £20 from a UK seller on eBay, great deal!

i would still need to get the young uns to turn lights off.

replaced all the halogen lamps in the downlighters and fancy fittings with LEDS last year when we did the loft conversion. have low energy lamps in all others . better deals when you have international purchasing power.
