Today on my new Madone, I discovered how useless the supplied tyres are, Bontrager race lite" but buying the bike had left me too skint to replace them when I bought it.

Whilst going up a damp 16% gradient, I found that I had no grip and my back wheel kept spinning, almost bringing me too a stop. The only way up was on the granny gear, just crawling, any attempt to stand or put pressure on led to my wheel spinning.

On the way down, I held back with the brakes to stop the bike running away, but just when I was almost at the bottom my back wheel went as I was almost into a right hand bend, letting go of my brakes made me speed up but once again both wheels went without applying the brakes and with a lot of gravel in my line the only thing I could do was straighten up, plowed up the grass embankment, brakes were then totally ineffective on the grass as I headed for a big bush. I just managed to turn but I was still speeding up with it being still downhill.

Then there in front of me was a big mound of hawthorn about 4' high the farmer had chopped down and no way could I avoid that, so with visions of my new Madone getting wrecked I rode straight into it, but somehow I pushed my way through to the other side and it slowed me down enough to be able to stop.

Incredibly the only evidence of the incident was a little sprig of hawthorn on the back of my frame and a big jump in my heart rate from my Garmin download. And I never even got a puncture apart from in my legs and under my armpit.

I know but sadly some tyres are worse than others. I have done this hill many times on my other road bikes in wet conditions with better tyres on and never "spun" the wheel on the way up, and flew down it and round the bend at the bottom without so much as a twitch.

I usually use Specialised Armadillo Elites but at the moment there a bit pricey for me, perhaps I should take a set of another bike I have. I did plan on just using the existing ones for a turbo or summer.

I'll have a look at the Roubaix to see what price they are

I was going to suggest that as a temporary measure.

You have a new bike!;) Have you got different gearing on this one?

Yes, I bought my self a Trek Madone 4.5 2009 model, been saving for months to buy the best Madone that I could afford, but I kept getting knocked back with disasters that I had to keep forking out for. The worst was when I had all my gas pipes condemed, and had to fork out for new central heating etc which severley battered my bike fund. A couple of turbo trainers in the front room would have been cheaper but I think my partner would not approve of it as a way of keeping warm.

With Xmas coming I thought I better buy what I can afford otherwise I would have squandered it on presents, women and booze.

I wanted a compact as I am not keen on triples but I was talked into it and glad I have been now as hill climbing has become a doddle. I've still got to try Nunburnholme uphill but most of the big hills around here I have done. Really pleased today, that despite crashing and becoming a bit unnerved I knocked 20 minutes off my hilly 53 mile route.

What frightens me a bit was very shortly before crashing I had gone down Nunburnholme between 40 and 50 and the small bends in it which you do not notice much going uphill, so how close was I to a big disaster then. Ironically when I looked at my Garmin downloads the bend I crashed on I have never gone round it at less than 29mph and usually its about 31mph but today I lost it going cautiously at only 20mph as I knew the tyres are not up to much and the bend is dangerous.

All being well I should be on it on the ride from York on Sunday unless I wreck it this week as I will be out at some point every day for a ride. Probably Saturday on the club run.

Somebody needs to educate me that speed is not everything which is why I'm looking forward to Sunday, something a bit more sedate
