Scart leads/HDMI

Just buy a new blu ray/DVD player, pretty cheap these days. Scart is old tech, HDMI is best. Some of my fellow workers insist on using old monitors with those blasted fiddly connectors where you need mouse-sized fingers (and some IT person was having a fun jape by putting the connector underneath the front panel). HDMI is miles better, just plug it in like USB.

Options are

(a) buy them a SCART (or composite) to HDMI adaptor. It's not just a cable, it will need to include circuitry to generate a digital HDMI bit stream from the analogue signal. It will therefore also need an external power source (usually micro USB or USB-C). If the old DVD player has no USB out (very likely) you'll need to run a cable from another device which does, or a phone charger etc.
The picture will be no better than on the old telly and possibly worse, as the adaptor has to convert the analogue signal to a digital one and the chips included to do that in the cheap adaptor will also be cheap ones. Cheap adaptors can have interference on the scart signal from the internal circuitry.

(b) buy them a new DVD/Bluray player. Picture will be better as it will upscale DVD to the new TV resolution. It will also play bluray discs which will be miles better picture. Buy them a few BR discs of their favourite movies for Christmas.

Try what exactly? You’ve been vague as to what exactly you researched doing.

Basically just wiring some wires in the SCART to the other plug and wiring some of the wires in the SCART cable to each other

I would have to examine the cable spec for both again to work out exactly what went where

and as I don;t do that sort of thing nowadays I am not sure I would remember all the bells and whistles

but if someone knows how to do that sort of thing then my checks then seemed to show that it might work

note lack of details and use of words like "might" - it would have to be the sort of thing you do - or instruction from someone who does - for it to have a chance of working
As I have not "fiddled" like that for over 10 years I would not trust my self do try it now
(and my wife certainly would not!!!)

You can't convert analogue SCART to digital HDMI just by re-wiring pins.

That's what I got for my Dad when his TV needed upgrading. It works.
