It wasn't exactly on a commute, but you guys know more about this sort of thing. I was out on a club ride yesterday lunchtime in a group of 12 riders. I was the lead rider (single file) going at about 40km/h.
It occurred right at the end of a short dual carriageway section where the road merges into 1 lane. A car passed us with lots of room just before, but then a large grain/aggregate type lorry accellerated to get past us. The back guys were ok, but the front 3 felt that our lives had been put in unneccessary danger - the lorry came level with us and swerved in, leaving us unclipping, braking hard and subsequently screaming obscenities! Too angry to remember the numberplate.
The guys at the back said he had no reason to swerve in as there was still plenty of space in the middle and no oncoming traffic.
Clearly the manoevre was dangerous, but should we have yielded earlier?
This is it - were were heading south and the swerve was where the silver car is. http://maps.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF8&ll=52.411998,-1.884874&spn=0.000705,0.001695&t=h&z=19
