Horrible news. I'm about to have to switch routes and the A435 through Kings Heath was looking like an option for me. Agree with others that it's an utterly hideous stretch of road.

This is the route I now take (via Stirchley) to avoid Kings Heath, works well in both directions.

Thanks - that works really well for me (currently cycle in from Lickey down the A38 but moving out to the sticks so will have to find somewhere around Earlswood and cycle in from there).

The only way in from Earlswood really is the A34, and it's not so bad. Not anywhere as bad as Kings Heath.

You could do the Rea Valley Cycle Route for most of that. Slower, but more peaceful.This is the route I now take (via Stirchley) to avoid Kings Heath, works well in both directions.
Went through Kings Heath today - lamp post almost totally obscured by flowers, and pavement is partially blocked by the same. Certainly has touched many people.

This is my neck of the woods. From Earlswood you could:
- go through Tidbury Green
- past Whitlocks End Station on Haslucks Green Rd
- just before Shirley Station, left on Green Ln
- follow straight through on Aquaduct Rd, Windmill Ln, Priory Rd
- left onto Cole Valley Rd (you're picking up one of my commute routes from here)
- left then right onto Wake Green Rd
- right onto Yardley Wood Rd
- left onto Woodstock Rd
- at end, right then left onto Brighton Rd
- which brings you out onto the A435
- from there, you know where you need to get to and can work out how to go from there
