Terrible, utterly terrible. As a parent my heart really does go out to the family.

I am encouraging my sons to cycle and currently cycling to school but I need to ingrain an awareness of incidents like this in them so they can see the importance of being careful and the consequences if it goes wrong. They are only 5 and 8 but I think I will be showing them this report.

I cycle through kings heath regularly and it's one of the worst roads in Birmingham. I will only go through there early in the morning on the way out of town on a 40-50mile run before the traffic builds, never during midday. The main problem with this road is the insane amount of buses that use it. I regularly count as many as 30+ buses on the high st at any one time. All the constant stopping causes other drivers to make stupid over taking manoeuvres and generally get angry. Any poor cyclist is the preverbal "shoot in the sandwich". Until the council curbs the amount of buses and lorries that us this route it will remain a death trap. AVOID AT ALL COSTS IF CYCLING THROUGH BIRMINGHAM.

Sad news. I know some kids at that school, and know that stretch of road well. And try to avoid it at all times.

That's an idea. Anybody got one?

Possibly. There's a mystery bike they've been seeing if they can get rid of in the office car park. But it might have already gone - or been donated to charity. I'll check.

This is terribly sad. Not far from me. Condolences to family and friends.

The bike's still there but they want £20 for it so no go I'm afraid. Anyway, I think a ghost bike would be removed as an obstruction as the pavements are narrow and often very busy there.

I cycled past the scene on my way in this morning (traffic was absolutely fine) and said a little prayer for her as I went by. Judging by where the flowers were placed it looks like this happened at or close by a pelican crossing. Very, very sad.
