I had my 1st puncture yesterday. I've only done just over 200 miles on the Durano Plus's, and I can't believe just how quick the tyre went down. I heard a 'Pfssssst' and straight away I was on the rear rim. There is a visible tear, right through the tyre and the 'protective' rubber. I always carry a spare tube, and changed it and was back on my way within 5 mins. To be on the safe side, when I got home, I swapped the damaged tyre to the front.

Reason for puncture? Well I did break my own rule of never riding in the gutter, or where car tyres don't reach. I have to cross 2 lanes of a dual carriageway before I can get into the right hand bus lane, which I usually manage, but on this occasion I couldn't get across due to traffic and had to cross later. Hence the crap at the last point before the bus lane, where vehicles never 'sweep' the road.

I hope this was just bad luck. I've used the Marathon Plus's on the hybrid for over 5,000 miles without a puncture. I know the Durano's don't offer the same thickness of protection, but I'd rather not have the heavy M+'s on the Allez road bike. Another couple of punctures could change my mind though!

Has anyone else had probs with the Duranos, and is there a better protection (but still lightweight) tyre I should consider? Or maybe I could just try having an M+ on the rear?

Why have you put a damaged tyre on the front wheel? That is one of the worse things you can do. A blowout at speed with the front tyre can have you headbutting the road before you know it. A very dangerous thing to do. Change the tyre now for a new one.

I used Durano S last year & think it was my 2nd or 3rd ride on them, I suffered a bad cut to the rear, but no puncture. Despite my best effort with the super glue the cut just got worse with each ride. Think I managed about 8-900 miles before the rear finally gave up. I was impressed with the tyre for grip etc, just life seems a bit short

I did consider changing it, but the split is only just visible from the inside of the tube if you bend the tyre. From the outside, it's cut, but it's only a razor thin cut and when inflated, and you can't see the inner tube through the tyre.

Every puncture must go completely through the tyre to puncture the inner tube, but surely people don't replace the tyre after a single puncture?

So my question is......How damaged does a tyre have to be before replacement is vital?

I'm not far off 4,000 miles on my Durano+ and have had 3 flats in that time, one slow one that I found the next day, and 2 thru the tread ones.
I can live with that kind of frequency tbh, I do pick a lot of glass out of them though, a by-product of an urban commute I suppose, leaves a lot of little nicks in the tread but it hasn't caused any problems.
Certainly not as tough as M+ but as they are also a third of the weight you wouldn't expect them to be

By the way described it was that the tyre is damaged with visible tear. Not a nick.
Nicks are fine, you can seal those with a little superglue.
A tear is not fine and as I said best not put on teh front wheel.

Personally I've not had a puncture on the D+ (though the road bike doesn't rack up huge miles) & I usually get 2-3 punctures on an M+ over it's life of about 6000 miles. I once got a puncture in an M+ less than 20 miles after putting it on the bike, so I think there's just a sods law thing.

If I replaced an M+ or D+ because of a visible tear in the puncture belt I'd be changing a tyre every other week, however the number of actual punctures I get is minimal.

I use marathon plus and i wonder why you changed??
Because a 700x23c D+ at 105psi is more comfortable than a 700x32C M+ at 80psi (let alone a the 700x32c D+ at 80psi which went on my hybrid last week)! & the D+ handles much better.

I swapped my M+'s to my Vittoria Randonneur Hyper's at the beginning of March as soon as all my ride was in daylight.

M+'s do a great job but they are not as good to ride on as my Vittoria's.

I usually use M+ on everything, but I went for D+ 25s for commuting, and they are faster, no doubt about it. But I, too, have had my first unscheduled deflation incident with mine yesterday. About 2000km ridden, so that's fair enough, I reckon. Fortunately, I was close to home, so could repair it in comfort. Took a stonking flint to get through it.

I'm on a splendid run with conti sports plus

as for damage to a tyre necessitating a change of tyre, you know when you see it, anything that deforms the tyre when it inflates is my yardstick, bluging or distortion
