Would it stir things up, if I as a Scot living in Yorkshire, were to suggest Yorkshire would have come second, if it were to become a country?

Yorkshire is pretty good, Northumberland is better though IMO.

The first time we went to Scotland we stopped at a hostel just south of the border and then walked through Keilder forest so the first time I entered Scotland was on foot (my ex was not a cyclist but she loved hill/fell walking)

Yeah, Kielder is gorgeous. Last time we were there, camping, I fell off my bike and did a fair amount of damage to my knee, not helped by playing football in the evening with the kids at the campsite.
