That depends on the car, how fast was this rider was going? Once I am knackered and drop below 7 mph uphill when touring, I get off and push, it feels like rest but I am still pushing the bike at nearly 4mph. If he was doing 5mph then my car (Focus) can do that without stalling .

yebbutt the OP was presumably slower than the lowest (uphill) speed else he'd not have had to do that. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that he wasn't mistakely in 3rd. Admittedly you do need to be pretty slow and or steep hill to not be able to trickle it along -diesels better in this regard.

The OP didn't make any disparaging petrol-head comment against the cyclist after all - other than his looking grumpy, so I'm inclined to take the explanation at face value - compared to someone complaining about cyclist being in the way or whatever

That said, I have used low-range on a land rover in order to crawl along extra slow, as 1st would have required clutch slipping (v slow q on tarmac rather than off-road)

I suspect the cyclistwas conscious of even a well-enough driven car behind and ended up irritated, and / or puffed trying to speed up, and hence was grumpy - with no fault of anyone involved

If he chooses to slip the clutch that is down to him, But it's the revving the engine which seems to be the problem.

well there's "reving up" in the hill start sense, as opposed to the being-a-boy-racer twattish sense. I suggest the responsible type driving claimed by the OP would lead me to suspect the former
