second hand car or new moped ?

FIL thinking of giving up his car and basically said we could have it for nowt if we tax and insure it or do i opt for a 50 cc moped new which i can use on the car licence.
insurance for both is very similar , ved for the car is £165 vs £30 ish for the moped
It would only really be used as a second car when i need to get to work if the weather is dodgy etc picking mini ck 2 etc when needed and might be good for mini ck 1 when she eventually passes her test .
Obviously fuel economy is lot different but your warm and dry !
Main car is a lease car through work which i intend to keep doing as i can still get a brand new car every year via salary sacrifice around £200 a month and all i have to do is put fuel in it as everything else is covered .

Personally I'd go for the car if it's been well looked after. Note that it's from personal experience where, despite SWMBO's concerns, I took ownership of my mum's old car. It's been really useful for all of us having been turned into a family run-a-bout and for emergencies.

Scooter much more fun but car more handy if you need a bit of shopping, or to carry a passenger. I think the fun factor outweighs the convenience, but that's just me

For a few bonus points, take the offer of the car, but insure it for your FIL as well as yourselves. Tell your FIL that he can borrow it whenever he wants.

I while back I was commenting to my wife that you just don’t see 50cc mopeds any more - when I was 17 they were everywhere, and I had one, but I wouldn’t want to take one out now.

I had a 50 cc chicken chaser as I used to call them in my twenties on a car license when I couldn't afford to run car and the new house, i was thinking it was better than a bicycle for the odd time I would need it but as you say everyone drives like indy car nowadays

That said, and established driver with a good record on another policy will often get 4 years NCD on a new policy.

I did a check with our current provider and gave us 6 years based on what we have currently, we had full NCD and it will drop to ,6 after the twatting Mrs CK did to the corolla

Keep the car if it's been reliable and if the upkeep is affordable. A moped won't be much better than a bike in bad weather (snow/ice).

Yes and also you'll need a fairly decent set of waterproofs to keep dry. Or accept that you'll get wet and have to dry at your destination. I have a full rainsuit which was only about 40 quid but it offers no padding or protection, and doesn't even have pockets. After all that, if you're still set on a moped then you could do a CBT and get a 125
