Self driving cars & The Moral Machine

Simple. The car will go round the corner at a speed where it can stop in the distance it sees to be clear. Therefore it will neither hit the tanker nor have to swerve to avoid it.

So they'll all go at a snails pace on corners then. Wouldn't that just create a problem for those following.

The majority of them are following markers laid into the floor, or have been programmed to travel between lines painted on the floor.

I drive at a speed where I can stop in the distance I can see to be clear. I drummed it into hundreds of pupils over the years to do the same thing, because if you don't you are quite likely to hit something.

I don't recall ever causing problems to following drivers either.

Some are now saying that those "laws" should be re-written, or at best ignored as far as self driving cars are concerned.

Did they justify this? The 3 (or 4) Laws of Robotics make a lot of sense.

Either way, driving at a speed where you can stop in the distance you can see to be safe does not mean "Crawling and holding everyone up", it is sheer common sense and anyone who deliberately ignores it is a fool.

But to get back on topic, that is how a driverless car would be programmed to proceed, as it is one of the premier rules in both the Highway Code and the Advanced Drivers Manual.

Not being a driver, how else are you expected to make a turn when your view is blocked, without slowing down to a speed where you can stop and see to be safe to continue. At a junction for instance in a built up area.
