I really dislike the restrictive nature of mummy type sleeping bags so have been looking for a good alternative and have found THIS.
It weighs just over a Kilo. I realise that it wont pack down as small as a mummy but that's something I'll just have to live with.

As I sleep quite warm I was also considering THIS bag.

It seems quite difficult to find a good bag that isn't a mummy style so if you have any suggestions let me know.

Thanks

Mark.

What about something like this

Just be careful on the weight. It says 1050g - I have a Blacks bag that says 950 on the label and weighs 1250. PHD designs is what I now have ( a warm and a less warm) and they will custom make. Pricey though

I can't recall the name, but Mountain Equipment do a down bag with an expandable section in the leg section, if that's any help - I bought one in a sale in the summer, tho' I haven't got around to trying it yet.

I'm looking at down bags because they pack down smaller which will hopefully offset the greater overall size of a rectangular bag compared to a mummy style.

This Deuter bag looks like a possibility. 90% down.

I've read this post with great interest and clicked all the links.

I've been looking for a couple of years for a similar bag. I want a three season bag, down filled, semi rectangular but in an extra long fitting.

According to my research it seems that such a bag just isn't manufactured - but if anyone can prove me wrong I'd be so grateful!

Tatteljee in Amsterdam do made to measure bags. http://www.tatteljee.nl/slaapzak.html You tell them how wide, you tell them how long, you tell them the temperature range, and you choose the fabric (cotton, nylon or extralight nylon, or a combination). If you want fitted sheets (cotton or silk) just tell them.
Jonk in Volendam is another larger workshop: http://www.donsana.nl/?page_id=228 Their standard length is 205 cm and 80 cm wide, and their extra long 220 cm. If you want it longer or wider than that, nearly everything is possible.
Is PHD the only remaining UK bag maker who still actually make their bags in the UK? That would be a shame.

Have you thought about going for a quilt teamed up with an insulating sleeping mat?

These come in different shapes and sizes - ranging from flat and rectangular to shaped. Here's a for instance:

http://cache.backpackinglight.com/backpackinglight/images/large/bpl_ul240quilt_lg.jpg][/img]

Which may be what you want if you want more space around the body, but not if you want wmore space around the feet. But as I said there are different shapes and sizes and you could get one custom made if you can't find the perfect shape off the peg

Thank you Willem very much! I thought you might just come up with something/someone! I'm going to drop both businesses an e-mail - the second one you mention doesn't seem to have an english version of their site but everyone speaks english over there, don't they?

I'm also taking a closer look at the backpackinglight site. I've seen a variation on the theme but not that one so while the boss isn't looking... But I have to say, it's the lack of space around my feet that I dislike the most (size 12 if you need to know).

Here a link to a very good shop. and particularly their page on rectangular models. There a quite a few in the just over 200 euro range. http://www.zwerfkei....aapzakken-deken The crucial Dutch word is deken, meaning blanket, as these have a zip around one side and the bottom of the bag so you can use them as a blanket. Or zip two together for a bag for two. And of course, they will all speak English.

If you're thinking of spending serious money, another one to consider is Jacks R Better. A US company, that specialise in hammock bedding, though it's equally suitable on the ground. I've had one for around four years, it's perfect for the use I put it too. The company were a pleasure to deal with, good customer service.

The website is truly dreadful! believe me the product is a lot better.
