I am thinking of doing Lejog next year and I really do not fancy the hassle of taking the bike on the train. Is it possible to sent it on ahead so I can collect it at the station when I arrive.

It was called PLA or Passenger's Luggage in Advance. It worked in the era when railway chappies like clerks and porters knew their place and tugged their forelocks and would bust a gut to do their duty for The Railway.

No plans made as yet, I am just thinking about the logistics at the moment. If I can persuade a friend to drive me, there will be no problem. Otherwise it will be train or possibly a coach. I have heard that sometimes there are problems finding space for bikes on some trains, hence my question. I did wonder about buying a bike at the start as Drago suggests but that would add significantly to the costs. I live in Whitby, N Yorks which is more or less midway and I am even considering doing a Lands End & return this year, and John o Groats next year but at 73 next birthday, time is probably against me.
However, as I said at the start, I am just thinking it through at the moment. Thanks for your interest guys.

Even later than that, I remember up until the eighties and even nineties I think I used to pick up parcels sent from Banbury to Marylebone 'for collection'. Back then you drive right onto the platform.

One last thought - there are people who will deliver your bike and then your overnight bag to your overnight stop for you for a fee, meaning you only need to worry about getting there. Worth considering?
