It's a bit more complicated than that...
From JOG, or Thurso, or Gills Bay, get the ferry to Orkney. Stay for a couple of nights enjoying the islands, then get the ferry to Aberdeen. Rail travel onwards from Aberdeen is simple.

Unless things have changed a lot in the last few years, getting a bike onto one of the three trains per day from Wick to Inverness is tough.

No plans made as yet, I am just thinking about the logistics at the moment. If I can persuade a friend to drive me, there will be no problem. Otherwise it will be train or possibly a coach. I have heard that sometimes there are problems finding space for bikes on some trains, hence my question. I did wonder about buying a bike at the start as Drago suggests but that would add significantly to the costs. I live in Whitby, N Yorks which is more or less midway and I am even considering doing a Lands End & return this year, and John o Groats next year but at 73 next birthday, time is probably against me.
However, as I said at the start, I am just thinking it through at the moment. Thanks for your interest guys.
Kudos for living in Whitby, my home town.

A great idea! I have this in mind for next year and will consider that
When we were looking at the Fridays' LonJoG tour a few years we considered it, as it would have been an easy way to get the tandem home. In the end we didn't have the spare holiday, so we packed up the bike in its box and brought it home on the bus with everyone else.

The bus then got a puncture on the M6, but that's another story.
