BikeFlights are a specialist bike shipper. As Cycleops mentioned, these are not cheap services though.

Yes and it was hard going , double packed it to save any damage happening which increased the cost due to extra weight .
You are better off finding someone who is flying over as sometimes they can take extra luggage foc in the planes hold

Agreed, but it will be included in the person's baggage allowance. Fine if they're not carrying much.

Not be necessarily. I've flown with my bike a few times and it's classed as sports luggage which one pays extra for. I've never flown with a bike though.

Seeing as how airlines want to charge you for a few extra inches of leg room now it's worth checking with the them first.

Moved to the US back in Aug. Bought a bike box (you can get specialised cardboard or hardcase ones, I bought HC as I want to take it on my travels in the US) and checked it in and flew with it, think it was £125. Like someone said fly with the bike and surprise your son!
The easiest way to find out accurately is probably to phone one of the big international parcel companies who specialise in air freight, e.g. DHL or UPS..
They will obviously want to know the weight and dimensions of the packaged bike.
Is this a new or used bike? If new, will that not have implications for import tax/duty at the other end? Given that new bikes tend to be cheaper in USA, would it not be easier and cheaper to send your son the cash to buy the bike over there?

Thanks for all replies guys but son had just told me that he is coming back for a visit in January so he can take it back to USA with him.
