The UK doesn't do tipping very well, it isnt in our nature.
The US is the place to go for tipping, it can tie you up in knots if you get it wrong.
This is an old article from the BBC website, that I found interesting.

I'm aways relieved when they auto add on a service charge. Saves me having to do any maths.

Always round up bar bills to the nearest 1 or 2 EUR. Much better than having shrapnel clanking around.

I don't like it, I assume (based on experience) that the person serving will not get any of that charge, it may not be a "service" charge but an additional "tax" on the meal.

Here's a question for you all, I work as a chinese takeaway driver two nights a week, i start on £20 (5pm -11.30 or 12.30am) and that covers my fuel, all delivery charges are mine which ranges from £1.30 - £5.00 (£5.00 being a good 15 minute drive each way) would you tip the driver and if so how much, or would it all depend on how much you were spending? If it wasn't for the tips i dont think the job would be worth doing as that pound tip here and there really adds up

On my very first trip to the USA, I was brought another beer by a barmaid in a bar in NYC. I honestly didn't know about how ingrained tipping is there, so I paid her the advetised price for the beer. I got the message when I saw the rather infuriated face on her.

Also here in Blighty, there are complex rules regarding the seasonal tipping of people who provide a service to your home, which I simply don't understand...apparently (acc to Mrs F) we tip the window cleaner at Christmas, but not the milkman. Dunno why/not...

I do tip the delivery driver, mainly because delivery is free in my area and it saves me the bother of driving. But the tip would only ever be small, maybe £1 -£1.50, what ever rounds it up.
If I had to pay for delivery I doubt I would tip.

Always tip the delivery driver. I round it up and add a quid.

I think that's what most people do tbh, but then you get people who take forever to answer the door and wait for their 10-40p back

I've started working for a new chinese and it uses the Justeat service where people order online and have the option of paying by card before food is delivered, would you still tip the driver?

I would think so. If I had some spare cash on me.
After all delivery is free.

I think that you'll find that they are told that they get a salary plus an explanation of how the gratuities are distributed when they sign their contract if they ever get asked to sign a contract.

Very interesting, where I've worked before, when joining you agree to your hourly rate. Any tips were then collected & kept by the person who serves that customer.

In my time as a chef I never received a share of the tips, tips went to waiting staff. However in my brief stint as a bar tender I made quite a lot in tips by providing a quick & friendly service. Mind you this was back before the gratuity system & not for a large restaurant chain, things could well of changed.

Don't agree with tips that are shared communally, it means less reward for working hard to provide an excellent service. One waiter could be working their ass off with a colleague who coasts along doing the bare minimum but still takes a share of the tips.

It's interesting which professions are commonly tipped & which are not.

I would allways tip because i have done a lot of those jobs myself, people who are on lower wages sometimes rely on their tips, its a personel choice though.I once worked on a cruise ship where we really did rely on tips, guess what happened to those that didnt tip........... ?
